Mobile Satellite Ventures and AnyData Corporation Announce Handset Development AgreementRESTON, Va., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) today announced an agreement to develop next generation handsets supporting both satellite and terrestrial cellular connectivity on MSV's hybrid wireless network. Under the agreement, AnyData will develop a complete component specification and evaluate and test components for a hybrid satellite/terrestrial L-band clamshell camera phone. "MSV's recent demonstration has proven the technical and commercial feasibility of its planned next generation hybrid network, with handsets indistinguishable from standard cellular handsets," said Monish Kundra, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development for MSV. "Our agreement with AnyData represents the latest step in our strategy to develop commercial hybrid handsets suitable for use with any of the major air interfaces targeted for our next generation network." "AnyData is pleased to work with MSV to develop the first fully-integrated hybrid cellular handset," said Dr. Soon Shin, President of AnyData Corporation. "We are excited that we can enable it on a planned platform in an ordinary cellular form factor at only a minor increase in initial cost." MSV currently holds over 800 issued and 500 additional published ATC patent claims to date. These 1300 issued and published claims span the breadth of all Ancillary Terrestrial Component (ATC) network features, functions and system components (including the satellite, terrestrial, satellite gateways and end user equipment). MSV has filed over 100 additional patent applications in the U.S. alone since 2001. Patent filings are in place not only in the U.S. but also in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia and elsewhere. As previously announced, the MSV cache of patent filings was further enhanced by MSV's acquisition of a portfolio of hybrid satellite-terrestrial patents from Celsat, with issue dates as early as 1991.
