IIJ Introduces Sender Authentication Technology; Installation in IIJ Services to Follow Installation at IIJ Headquarters

TOKYO --(Business Wire)-- March 17, 2005 -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ)(NASDAQ:IIJI), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced it will introduce sender authentication as part of its countermeasures to the increasingly serious problem of spam email. IIJ will introduce the system for the Company's internal use by the end of March 2005 and then install it to the mail outsourcing service for corporate customers and the mail service for consumer customers.

One of the primary reasons spammers can send large volumes of email is because it is very easy to falsify the sender's information. Sender authentication is a method of verifying the sender's mail server when receiving email. With this system: (1) authentication information for the sending server is posted in the DNS record (such as publicly available information on the sending server, or a public key for an electronic signature attached to the mail), (2) the receiving server references the sending server's information and compares it with the mail it receives, thus confirming the mail as valid when the information matches. This method is extremely effective at combating spam sent with falsified domain names and helps defeat scams such as "phishing," which have resulted in widespread losses recently. First, IIJ will introduce sender authentication at IIJ using a combination of IP-based (Sender ID / SPF) and cryptographic-based (DomainKeys) authentication methods.

So that customers using the IIJ DNS Service can implement sender authentication for mail sent from their companies, the user support service (IIJ Service Online) was modified on February 22, 2005 to allow TXT record editing. During FY2005, IIJ will implement sender authentication in the mail outsourcing service for corporate customers and the mail service for consumer customers.

IIJ will continue technological research to improve its services and give customers the most user-friendly email environment possible.

IIJ DNS Service

The IIJ DNS Service provides customers with DNS servers, which are required to send mail and run other services with unique domain names. The Domain Administration Service provides domain name registration and maintenance services, and it consists of the DNS hosting services called DNS Outsource Service and the DNS Secondary Service.
