Conexant Introduces World's First Dual-Channel 8PSK and DVB-S2 Advanced Modulation Satellite Tuner; Company Sets Industry Record with Cumulative Tuners/Demodulators Shipments Exceeding 120 Million
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- June 20, 2005 -- Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor solutions for broadband communications, enterprise networks and the digital home, today announced the world's first dual-stream radio frequency (RF) satellite tuner. The low-power, direct down conversion CX24128 is intended for high-volume set-top box (STB) receivers used for personal and digital video recording (PVR/DVR) applications, and is shipping to customers now. The highly integrated CX24128 supports 8PSK and DVB-S2 advanced modulation and coding specifications, which provide satellite operators with higher data rates and increased capacity to deliver additional high-definition television (HDTV) channels and services using existing bandwidth and infrastructure. In addition, the device also allows manufacturers to reduce bill-of-material (BOM) costs by integrating two tuners into the single device, while saving board space and simplifying RF design layout.
The company also announced that it has set a new industry record with cumulative shipments of more than 120 million tuners and demodulators to customers globally, up from a total of 80 million in June of last year.
"We leveraged our extensive systems and RF expertise in order to deliver an innovative dual-channel tuner with excellent performance and signal isolation between the two tuner paths," said Jeff Crosby, vice president and general manager of Conexant's Broadband Media Processing business. "We are proud of this significant engineering accomplishment, which provides cost benefits to both manufacturers and satellite operators, and will further enable the industry's drive into the growing digital video recording market. We are equally pleased that we continue to be the world's leading provider of tuners and demodulators."
The CX24128 dual-channel tuner delivers excellent phase noise performance and very low implementation loss, which are required for advanced modulation systems such as 8PSK and DVB-S2. Key features include a state-of-the-art architecture that provides for up to 60 decibel (dB) isolation between the device's two tuner paths for better path-to-path protection. The CX24128 also has a built-in auto-tuning machine that accelerates calibration time and reduces software development time. The on-chip fractional synthesizers enable fine frequency step size without adversely affecting lock time.
The low-power CX24128 requires only a single 3.3 V power supply and has an improved power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) that reduces the need for power supply conditioning components required for proper operation. An external Balun is not required, further reducing BOM costs. The dual-channel tuner can also be used with Conexant's advanced modulation satellite demodulators to provide a complete front- and back-end system solution.
Conexant offers a comprehensive suite of digital STB components and system solutions for worldwide satellite, terrestrial and cable entertainment broadcasting networks. The company's product offering includes silicon tuners, satellite demodulators, MPEG audio and video decoders, and dial-up modems for back-channel applications. Reference designs that help manufacturers reduce cost and speed time to market are also offered, bundled with a range of operating systems, middleware, drivers and development tools.
Packaging and Pricing
The CX24128 is packaged in a 48-pin, lead-free quad flat pack (QFN), and is priced at $8.00 in quantities of 10,000.
