Philippines' SMART Communications Signs the Largest Motorola Canopy(TM) Wireless Broadband Equipment Deal to Date

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., and MANILA, Philippines, July 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. and the Philippines' SMART Communications signed a multi-million dollar contract for the purchase of Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband products. The multi-year contract, signed in June 2005, is the largest single contract to date for Canopy products.

Over the period of this contract, SMART plans to provide broadband Internet and data services to residential and business subscribers using Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband products. SMART is scheduled to start deploying Canopy Advantage(TM) equipment later this year throughout the Philippines. The Canopy based wireless broadband network will provide SMART a new source of revenue opportunities with significant upward growth potential based on current service demand for new services in both developed and undeveloped regions of the Philippines. SMART is the Philippines' leading telecommunications services provider with more than 20 million cellular subscribers.
SMART has spent more than 12 months in trial deployments with Motorola's Canopy platform.
"We believe that wireless broadband is the most affordable way for the people in the Philippines to be able to receive reliable, high-speed Internet connectivity," said Rene Dos Remedios, president of Meridian Telekoms, Inc., a subsidiary of SMART Communications that is focused on the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) business. "We live in a country that makes fiber and wired alternatives cost prohibitive to deploy. The Canopy platform allows us to deliver broadband and data services at price points Filipinos can afford with the ability to easily scale our networks."
"SMART's business case envisions an available market for wireless broadband services to reach upward of several million subscribers in the Philippines over the next five years. Motorola is committed to supplying a portfolio of very cost effective wireless broadband products that can provide the end-user with the voice and data services they desire," said Adrian Nemcek, executive vice president, Motorola and president, Motorola Networks.
