PROSPECTS FOR BULK PINEAPPLE BRIGHTEN (technical protocols for shipping by sea completed)(India Business Insight Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)The pre-harvest and post-harvest protocols for shipping pineapple by sea have been completed and this has brightened the prospects of large- scale exports of the fruit from India. A pilot consignment of 5 tonnes has been shipped to Dubai on 24 Dec 2005, and the protocols would be finalised for adoption after the consignment is tested for any internal or other damages. The protocol has been developed by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Kerala Agri Export Zone of the State Agriculture department and NAPC, which produces the pineapple-based drink Jive. French agricultural research centre CIRAD has also collaborated in developing the protocols. India has a production of over a million tonnes of pineapple fruit per annum from over 75,000 hectares.
