Rotarian to visit village after appeal reaches GBP25,000(Hull Daily Mail)Rotary Club fundraisers in Hull have already raised about GBP25,000 to help rebuild the lives of tsunami survivors. An appeal was launched in July to raise GBP125,000 to rebuild Sri Lankan village Puliyadikudah. Dr John Gosnold, chairman of the club's tsunami appeal, said: "We have managed to raise a lot of money for the appeal and I am very happy about it. "It has been a difficult year for a lot of people around the world and there have been lots of needy causes that people have been fundraising for. "We are very pleased with where we are as far as the fundraising is concerned. "We will continue trying to raise as much money as possible until June 2006." The biggest event so far has been a charity ball at the KC Stadium. The money the club is raising will buy 30 houses, a school and a church. It is hoped about 200 people will be rehoused. A year on, many people from the village are still living in tents at camps. Dr Gosnold is going to the Rotary club in Kandy, Sri Lanka, next month to present the first cheque for GBP20,000. He said: "I am taking a holiday and will be able to see first hand the progress being made over there. "The village will already be undergoing its rebuild, but this way I get to see the development." The appeal has received many donations alongside the fundraising events. In October, businesses across East Yorkshire took part in a event where workers donated an hour's pay to the fund. Individual donations to the fund have ranged from GBP5 to GBP1,000. The club also hopes to buy 10 fishing boats to help villagers earn a living. |
