Linksys to launch VoIP handset for Skype

(BNamericas.com)US communications solutions provider Linksys, owned by Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO), is to launch a wireless telephone to function with VoIP company Skype, reported local news service AE-Setorial.

The telephone, called Linksys CIT200, will be launched in Brazil and is targeted at Skype users, enabling them to call anywhere via their home computer. The phone operates up to 20 meters from the PC, according to the report.

The new phone, which was scheduled for launch in November, will cost 800 reais (US$358) in Brazil.

The system comes with one hour of calls anywhere worldwide and also has an answering machine function.

The phone is compatible with Skype's SkypeIn product, which allows incoming calls to a fixed line number.

With 3.8 million users registered, Brazil is already the fourth largest country for Skype in terms of users after the US, Poland and Germany.

In October, Linksys and Brazilian fixed line operator Tmais joined forces to offer VoIP services. The companies have been negotiating with retailers Fnac and Fast Shop to sell VoIP telephone handsets in Brazil.
