EC clears Oracle-Siebel merger

The European Commission today cleared the proposed acquisition of Siebel Systems by Oracle Corporation. The EC concluded that the transaction would not significantly damage the European Economic Area.

Oracle is a software company that specialises in database products and application software solutions for enterprises. Siebel offers customer relationship management (CRM) software for a variety of industry sectors.

The EC decided that widely-used open standards make it unlikely that the merged company would impose restrictions on Siebel CRM customers that use non-Oracle databases. The EC also stated that the merger would not materially affect customers ability to choose among competing CRM software vendors.
