China Netcom Denied Contact with Skype over VoIP Service

(SinoCast China Business Daily News)BEIJING, December 12, SinoCast -- A China Netcom official denied rumor that the mobile operator is in talks with Skype on promotion of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service.

At the moment, a handful of Internet users have subscribed for the VoIP service, and it is hard to say whether the Internet is capable of bearing huge traffics if the service is in commercial use, the official said.

Skype integrated software, phone service and broadband operation, and it is able to provide cheap and even free communication service for users. On that score, Skeype won over a user base of 54 million people across the world.

However, Skype is imposing a strong impact on traditional fixed line carriers while offering users great benefit.

Currently, Skype-led VoIP service providers only collect 10% of the call charge by traditional telecom operators. Besides, Skype and its counterparts levy very much lower charge on international long-distance calling service than the telecom carriers do.
