Hispanic Chamber president Alvarez resigns

(Amarillo Globe-News (Texas) (KRT)) Dec. 9--The president of the Amarillo Hispanic Chamber of Commerce resigned to joined the Small Business Administration. Tony Alvarez was hired in June and immediately announced plans to develop a Franchise Center to teach the business model, with classes offered through the chamber.



Alvarez will work as district director for the SBA in San Antonio, where he lived before joining the Hispanic chamber here.

Jesse Morales, chairman of the board, said he was not surprised about the resignation this week.



"Tony's a high-caliber type person. He is talented, well-educated, so I was not surprised," Morales said. Alvarez' last day is Dec. 16.

The Globe-News was unable to contact Alvarez.

The Hispanic chamber is looking for a successor, Morales said. The new president should be versed in nonprofit management and have the ability to write grants, he said.

Cultural connection is vital, Morales said.

"Being bilingual is important to us as well because of the nature of our chamber."

The first sessions of the Franchise Center are scheduled for Feb. 2-4.

"The Franchise Center is going to one of our major initiatives in 2006," Morales said.

"Not doing it is not an option," he said, noting the center was underwritten by two local banks.

"Tony's going help us kick this thing off," Morales said.
