Telemarketing Ban Lifted in Some Areas of Louisiana, But Not New Orleans

Louisiana has lifted the ban on telemarketing in three area codes while maintaining the prohibition in two.

On Aug. 26, Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency when Hurricane Katrina represented an imminent threat to the

Gulf Coast. The state of emergency was set to be in effect from Aug. 26 through Sept. 25 "unless terminated sooner."

The state has lifted the emergency ban on solicitation of those not on the do-not-call list in area codes 318, 225 and 337. The prohibition remains in force for area codes 504 and 985, "except for those calls to numbers not registered on the do-not-call list that are from governmental or private relief agencies offering aid, and from the called individual's employer, or from an employment agency offering placement assistance free of charge to the called individual."

Area code 318 includes such places as Shreveport and Monroe while 225 contains Baton Rouge and 337 covers Lafayette and Lake Charles. New Orleans' area code is 504 and 985 includes the areas close to New Orleans, including Houma and Slidell.
