MILPITAS, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 15, 2005 -- Solectron Corporation (NYSE:SLR), a leading provider of electronics manufacturing and integrated supply chain services, announced that Solectron's manufacturing plant in West Columbia, S.C., has been recognized as one of the 10 Best Plants in North America, by Penton Media's IndustryWeek magazine.
IndustryWeek's Best Plants Award Program, started 16 years ago, is an annual recognition of outstanding manufacturing facilities all across North America. The honor recognizes world-class manufacturing capabilities and a management mindset of continuous improvement. The plant was one of more than 220 facilities nominated between October 2004 and March 2005.
"The caliber of this year's class of winners is exceptional. Their world-class performances demonstrate the excellence that results from strong leadership, an engaged workforce and outstanding improvement strategies," said Patricia Panchak, IndustryWeek Editor-in-Chief. "Manufacturing managers in search of world-class ideas would do well to emulate the techniques of our 2005 winners. IndustryWeek is proud to share their success stories."
According to IndustryWeek, these plants are on the leading edge of efforts to increase competitiveness, enhance customer satisfaction, and create stimulating and rewarding work environments.
The plant will receive a commemorative award at ceremonies tentatively scheduled for Oct. 4, 2005, at the West Columbia site.
"This world class performance is a direct result of empowered people applying the Solectron Production System(TM) (SPS) -- our own winning combination of Lean kaizen and Six Sigma principles," said Marc Onetto, executive vice president, Operations. "In our view, what makes Solectron stand out as a winner is our dedication to meeting and even exceeding our customers' expectations. Through the total transformation of our factory using SPS, Solectron has benefited our customers in faster delivery, flexibility to changes, world class competitiveness and higher quality."
"This is a testament to our plant's dedication to team work, quality, and customer responsiveness," said John Petta, general manager, Solectron S.C. "We are coupling the Six Sigma Methodology into our Lean processes to form the most cost competitive, responsive, defect-free CM operation in the world."
Plants reported practices and performance in such categories as management strategy, community involvement, customer and supplier relations, employee relations, environmental and safety programs, inventory management, manufacturing and flexibility, productivity, use of technology and market results.
