Interpeak Unveils MPLS Option for the IPNET Protocol Stack; First company to offer the MPLS software data plane with its stackSTOCKHOLM, Sweden, & LEESBURG, Va. --(Business Wire)-- May 2, 2005 -- Interpeak, a pioneer of Internet and security protocol solutions for embedded systems, announced today that IPNET, its industry-leading IPv6-compatible protocol stack, is now available with Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) capabilities integrated directly into the stack. MPLS offers significant advantages over IP routing, such as high forwarding speeds, bandwidth management, and scalability. Interpeak's new MPLS offering comes at a time when geographically separated enterprises increasingly require effective Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that support Quality of Service (QoS). Security is essential to virtual corporate networks that communicate over the public Internet while supporting applications such as IP telephony. MPLS is emerging as a de-facto standard for such network-based VPNs. MPLS is a WAN transport technology that enables routers to make forwarding decisions using the contents of a simple label rather than a complex route lookup based on the destination IP address. This results in a faster transmission, while supporting VPN with QoS. As vendors rapidly build and deploy VPNs to satisfy market demands, they abide by the guidelines in the IETF's RFC 2547, which requires routers to segregate routing information by VPN. The TCP/IP stack must maintain a forwarding table for each directly attached VPN. Called virtual routing, this system presents significant cost savings due to the ability to eliminate numerous physical routers. Each connected network no longer needs its own router, but can simply have its own secure forwarding table maintained by the TCP/IP Stack. "With MPLS available as part of the IPNET networking stack, many device designers will be able to take advantage of IPNET's extraordinary capabilities, whether working with IPv4 or IPv6," commented Hakan Millroth, VP Product Marketing at Interpeak. "VPNs, and therefore MPLS, are an integral part of the future of networked devices." IPNET with integrated MPLS software data plane is available now.
