Half Day Session Focuses on Services and Products Available to Individuals with Hearing, Mobile and Visual Disabilities
CTIA-The Wireless Association(TM) announces Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Michael Copps will present the opening keynote address at a half day Wireless Disabilities Workshop CTIA is hosting on March 14 at CTIA WIRELESS 2005. Representatives from the disability community will join leaders from the wireless industry and the federal government to focus on the technical and policy issues involved with continuing to make wireless services accessible to individuals with hearing, mobile and visual disabilities.
"Wireless phones started as a luxury toy for the wealthy businessperson. Yet, in 21 short years, this industry has advanced the technology and lowered its price so that all consumers - regardless of where they live, the language they speak, or what disabilities they may face - can enjoy the convenience and safety provided by wireless technology," said Steve Largent, President & CEO of CTIA. "CTIA and its member companies remain committed to providing accessible wireless services for all consumers and look forward to this opportunity to meet again with the Disabilities Community and discuss how together we can continue to provide innovative new services for those with hearing, mobile and visual disabilities."
There will be three panel sessions: "Gadgets and Gizmos: What's Here and What's Coming", "The Consumer Perspective: What Consumers Expect and Need to Know" and "Standards and Testing: Status". The panels feature speakers from consumer groups, research institutes, the federal government and the wireless industry, including representatives from the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and Consumer and Government Affairs Bureau, the Food and Drug Administration, American Council of the Blind, Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, Cingular Wireless, Georgia Tech Wireless RERC, Motorola, National Association of the Deaf, National Spinal Cord Injury Association, Nextel, Nokia, Research In Motion, Self Help for the Hard of Hearing, Sony Ericsson, Sprint and UT Starcomm.
