Carrius Technologies Selects Spirent Communications Abacus 5000 IP Telephony Test System to Streamline Quality Processes

Spirent Enables Multi-Service Access Gateway Manufacturer to Accelerate Time to Market and Automate Rigorous Internal Testing Procedures

SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 9, 2005 — Spirent Communications™ (NYSE: SPM; LSE: SPT) today announced that Carrius Technologies Inc. has selected the Abacus 5000 IP Telephony Test System for engineering and production testing of its Compleat-200TM intelligent IP gateway. Carrius Technologies is a manufacturer of intelligent gateways for Internet Protocol (IP) telephone network interconnection.

Carrius Technologies is using Abacus 5000 Test System’s extensive automation features to accelerate several thousand tests the company conducts as part of its stringent quality control. By streamlining its testing processes, the Abacus 5000 will allow the company to bring new carrier-class products to market faster with more features, functionality and enhanced performance.

“Spirent’s Abacus 5000 has provided us with unmatched scale to quicken our aggressive testing schedule,” said Terry Caterisano, director of network interoperability for Carrius Technologies. “The extensive features and protocol support perfectly complement the internal test automation regime we believe sets us apart in the industry.”

Using its own Web-enabled test automation software, Carrius has created more than 2,000 automated testing scripts. These internal tools cover the full range of VoIP and other protocols encountered by its customers in deployment environments. Now, with Spirent’s Abacus 5000, Carrius can perform around-the-clock automated regression testing for thousands of simultaneous tests.

“Validation of carrier-class VoIP equipment is mission critical as service providers race to deliver low cost, next-generation communications in an environment characterized by complex layers of technology protocols,” said Bahaa Moukadam, vice president of IP Telephony for Spirent Communications. “Manufacturers who fail to employ robust testing platforms like the Spirent Abacus 5000 IP Telephony Test System will face intense scrutiny from their customers.”

Carrius is also using the customization and portability benefits of the Abacus 5000 to pretest each customer’s unique environment, and then to demonstrate results in personalized on-site customer presentations to further enhance their competitive edge.

When bundled with Abacus 5000, Carrius’ proprietary testing scripts configure environments, loads and runs the tests, parses data to internal libraries, builds results and processes trend data. Finally, detailed test results allow in-depth analysis of system performance. This powerful combination streamlines their enormous feature and protocol interworking testing while simultaneously accelerating regression testing. This ability validates compatibility across past, present and future generations of the Compleat-200TM gateway product family.

Spirent’s Abacus 5000 can test and analyze many unique scenarios through its support of interworking among TDM protocols (C7/SS7, CAS, ISDN, TR-008, GR-303) and VoIP protocols (SIP, SIP-T, H.323, MGCP, Megaco), and it can test all these protocols at carrier-scale traffic volumes. Each Abacus IP card accommodates up to 4,096 signaling end points and 1,024 media end points.
