Alereon Voices Support for WiMedia and MBOA Merger; Company is WiMedia Founding Member and Board Representative

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)-- March 3, 2005 -- Alereon, a leading fabless semiconductor company developing wireless solutions for the Ultrawideband (UWB) and Wireless USB (W-USB) markets, today announced its support for merging the MBOA and WiMedia industry alliances. Creating one body representing standards and certification with the broad support of all companies designing Multiband OFDM-based solutions will shorten time-to-market and ensure technology and vendor compatibility. Alereon is demonstrating its chipset technology and vision of the future of Wireless USB at the Intel Developers Forum in San Francisco, Calif.

The new WiMedia Alliance unifies standardization, certification and regulatory efforts. Personal computer and consumer electronics manufacturers -- many of which plan to ship UWB-enabled product later this year -- benefit from a single, simplified UWB standardization processes.

"As a founding member of WiMedia we are very pleased to have played a part in this significant industry event," said Jim Meyer, vice president of business development for Alereon, WiMedia board member and a founder of the WiMedia Alliance. "The merging of these two organizations consolidates efforts in one stronger organization with support from the CE, PC and mobile industries. This is a natural event as we transition UWB solutions from a development phase to commercialization."

The WiMedia Alliance also is supported by the W-USB implementers forum and Wireless 1394 (Firewire) Trade Association, ensuring interoperability among complementary consumer technologies.

The WiMedia Alliance includes the most influential consumer electronics, personal computing, home entertainment, mobile phone, semiconductor and digital imaging manufacturers.

WiMedia Alliance spokespersons described the group's objectives as:

-- Promote and enable the rapid adoption and standardization of UWB worldwide;

-- Promote worldwide UWB spectrum regulations;

-- Maintain a neutral and open forum for the establishment of requirements, specifications and best practices.
