Yesterday I got excited about rumors surrounding Yahoo!'s purchase of VoIP-based technology services company DialPad. After the rumors were confirmed by a message posted on DialPad’s Web site, more Yahoo! VoIP news emerged.

As I explained yesterday, the Web-based portal giant enhanced its Instant Messaging (IM) client last month to include free PC to PC-based calls. Today, though, I came across important news from Xten Networks Inc., a provider of VoIP, Video over IP, Instant Messaging (IM), and Presence SIP softphones, also announcing a deal with Yahoo! According to the deal, Yahoo! agreed to license Xten's eyeBeam software development kit (SDK) to deliver SIP-based PC-to-PC VoIP in the new Yahoo! Messenger Beta available for download at http://messenger.yahoo.com/.

"We are extremely pleased that Yahoo! chose Xten for this project," explained Erik Lagerway, COO and president for Xten. "The excellent call quality with Yahoo! Messenger's PC-to-PC calling feature is a direct result of the combined efforts of our engineering teams."

"Providing a high-quality instant messaging service is our number one priority, which is why we choose to work with Xten Networks, the best-of-breed standards-based voice engine provider, to ensure our users have an exceptional PC-to-PC calling experience," stated Frazier Miller, director of the Messenger division of Yahoo!

Xten described its softphones for Windows, MAC OS X, Pocket PC and now Linux as software apps, which run on devices such as personal computers (PCs) or personal digital assistants (PDAs) or can be integrated into set-top boxes, embedded devices, IM apps and alike. When an Xten softphone is connected to a service provider's network, the user can make and receive calls to and from other "on-net" callers (IP-to-IP) and/or "off-net" callers (IP-to-PSTN/Cellular) with the same quality of service they would expect from an IP handset. However, at a fraction of the cost, while providing more features and functionality than an IP handset.

I will certainly keep you posted on Yahoo!’s VoIP endeavors as soon as more info becomes available.
