IRI Unveils Top 25 Table Wine Trendsetters Ranking

CHICAGO --(Business Wire)-- June 9, 2005 -- California-Based Table Wine Brands Leading Growth According to New IRI Study

Information Resources, Inc., a leading provider of consumer behavior insights to the consumer packaged goods (CPG), retail, and beverage alcohol industries, today announced the release of its first annual Table Wine Trendsetters Ranking, an all-new revealing study that pinpoints the top 25 most influential Table Wine brands. These individual brands have experienced significant growth in U.S. supermarkets and drugstores across multiple variables during the 52 week period ending March 20, 2005.

Leveraging its extensive Beer, Wine, and Spirits vertical expertise, IRI analyzed volume growth, share of segment trends, merchandising effectiveness, front line pricing stability, profitability, distribution gains, incremental sales, and sales velocity growth to develop this distinguished list of leading brands. To qualify for the study, brands had to meet a minimum requirement of 100,000 9L cases sold.

The results of IRI's extensive evaluation comprise the following Top 25 Table Wine Trendsetters Ranking, a distinguished list of Table Wine Brands that are successfully leading the way: -0- *T -------------------------------------------------------- The IRI Top 25 Table Wine Trendsetters Ranking -------------------------------------------------------- Rank Table Wine Brand -------------------------------------------------------- 1 Yellow Tail -------------------------------------------------------- 2 Mirassou -------------------------------------------------------- 3 Barefoot -------------------------------------------------------- 4 Sterling Vintners Collection -------------------------------------------------------- 5 Smoking Loon -------------------------------------------------------- 6 R H Phillips Vineyard -------------------------------------------------------- 7 Ravenswood Vintners Blend -------------------------------------------------------- 8 Francis Coppola -------------------------------------------------------- 9 Leaping Horse -------------------------------------------------------- 10 Crane Lake -------------------------------------------------------- 11 Columbia Crest -------------------------------------------------------- 12 Bella Sera -------------------------------------------------------- 13 Blackstone -------------------------------------------------------- 14 Alice White -------------------------------------------------------- 15 Schmitt Sohne -------------------------------------------------------- 16 Century Cellars By BV -------------------------------------------------------- 17 Bogle Vineyards -------------------------------------------------------- 18 Covey Run -------------------------------------------------------- 19 Black Swan -------------------------------------------------------- 20 Concha Y Toro Frontera -------------------------------------------------------- 21 J Lohr -------------------------------------------------------- 22 Estancia -------------------------------------------------------- 23 Louis Jadot -------------------------------------------------------- 24 Chateau Ste Michelle -------------------------------------------------------- 25 Foxhorn -------------------------------------------------------- *T

"What really sticks out in this analysis is the dominance of California following nearly a decade of booming imports that stole critical market share from the domestic industry," said Rich Cartiere, editor and publisher of Napa Valley-based Wine Market Report. "Where a decade ago you might say the state's wine industry was sitting on its hands not realizing the intense competition it was about to face from foreign producers, IRI's Trendsetter analysis clearly shows that California vintners now are making a comeback--they have bought or formed joint venture brands with the Australians, they have created scores of new brands at different print prices where imports were making great inroads, and they also have come up with new, more relevant consumer packaging, bottle sizes and even marketing materials."

According to Robert Sands, President and Chief Operating Officer of Constellation Brands, "as a growth-oriented company, we're proud to have top-ranking table wine brands in the first annual IRI Table Wine Trendsetters report. Our investments to gain consumer insights, as well as the consumer trend feedback we gather from our retail and distributor business partners, work in concert with our entrepreneurial structure to ensure that we can meet ever changing tastes."

In addition to the Top 25 ranking, the study also revealed several key trends that are driving the growth of today's rapidly evolving Table Wine marketplace.

-- An increase in merchandising support appeared to contribute to the success of the top 25 brands (all brands experienced an increase in weeks of support and the majority of brands increased their display presence in the Food and Drug channels)

-- 15 out of the top 25 brands are Domestic Table Wines from California

-- Imported Table Wine brands held 7 of the 25 spots, with Australia as the # 1 Import Country of Origin with three brands

-- The vast majority of brands (84%) are premium priced at $5.50 and above, while no brands in the $2.99 and below segment made the ranking

-- All Table Wine Trendsetter brands grew by double-digits or more in dollars over the 52 week period, and 21 out of 25 brands grew by double-digits in volume

-- Nearly all (24 out of 25) brands increased their presence at retail with an increase in average items per store and increased distribution

"The wine market is incredibly dynamic and today's wine makers are taking product development, marketing and retail execution to the edge of the envelope," said Bump Williams, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Global Consulting, Beverage Alcohol Practice, IRI. "The brands on this year's Top 25 have put traditional thinking to the wayside and delivered breakout performance through new and innovative thinking. We applaud their success."
