Apply for College Financial Aid Even If You Don't Think You Qualify, Says Chuck Hughes, Author of Book on Ivy League Admissions Secrets
BOSTON --(Business Wire)-- Jan. 26, 2005 -- Apply for college financial aid--even if think you won't qualify, says Chuck Hughes, author of What It Really Takes to Get into the Ivy League and Other Highly Selective Colleges (McGraw-Hill) and co-president of the Web-based admissions counseling firm Road to College.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required not only for need-based aid but all student financial aid from the feds, including the Pell Grant, Perkins Loan, Stafford Loan and on-campus work-study programs, says Steve Pemberton, co-president of the firm.
-- Do it online. Apply at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The online FAFSA is processed sooner than the paper form and is more accurate because it built-in error-checking.
-- Apply between January 1 and Feb. 15, even though the federal deadline is June 30. Many colleges and state financial-aid programs set an earlier deadline. Read the college's financial-aid literature and research state deadlines early on.
-- Do not wait until you've filed your 2004 income tax return to submit the FAFSA. Estimate your 2004 income. You can correct the information after you've filed your return.
-- Stay in"form"ed. Other documents may be needed to accompany the FAFSA. Many colleges and universities ask families to complete the College Scholarship Service/Profile as a first document. Ask.
