Barracuda Networks Launches Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition; New Plug-and-Play Appliance Provides Comprehensive Protection for Outbound Email

CUPERTINO, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Jan. 17, 2005 -- Barracuda Networks, Inc., the leading provider of spam firewall solutions, today announced the Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition, a new version of the award-winning Barracuda Spam Firewall. The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition enables organizations to enforce corporate and regulatory policies, and to ensure outgoing email is legitimate and virus-free.

"No organization wants to be the source of spam or viruses," said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. "Likewise companies want to make sure that the content of email, especially when concerning confidential information or trade secrets, is not inappropriately disseminated. The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition is a powerful tool for monitoring email traffic and ensuring only valid and appropriate email is sent out."

The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition is a powerful enterprise-class solution that provides outbound email protection in three key areas:

-- Stops virus propagation

-- Enforces corporate and regulatory policies

-- Prevents spamming

Virus Outbreak Protection

The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition prevents viruses from being sent to users outside the corporate network using a variety of methods including dual layer virus blocking, and decompression of archives.

This feature was especially important for CC Communications, an advanced telecommunications -- including voice, data, wireless, Internet and interactive television -- provider in Fallon, Nev. CC Communications purchased the Barracuda Spam Firewall 400 -- Outbound Edition to help monitor email traffic for thousands of its Internet service customers. Using the Barracuda Spam Firewall 400 -- Outbound Edition, CC Communications can identify users that have a virus and can stop it before it is disseminated.

"This product has helped us to be more proactive in policing email traffic sent by our customers," said Gene Ponce, network administrator for CC Communications. "Prior to installing the Barracuda Spam Firewall 400 -- Outbound Edition, we ran the chance of having our domains blacklisted, which would essentially cripple our ISP business. Now we can be sure that our services are not being used for inappropriate email activity such as virus or spam generation."

Corporate and Regulatory Policy Enforcement

Organizations must also make sure that intellectual property and other confidential information is protected. Without a solution in place, policy enforcement remains a challenge for most IT departments.

"It makes good business sense for any organization that relies on email communication, to have a way to enforce corporate information policies and to protect intellectual property," said Drako. "The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition is an easy, affordable and effective way for companies to do this."

In addition, heightened awareness surrounding government regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and Gramm-Leach-Bliley, have increased the need for organizations to take a more proactive role in policing what information is disseminated through email.

The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition is designed to enforce such policies through footer attachment, scanning and filtering, keyword and attachment blocking. The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition also enables the administrator or user to set quarantine parameters for questionable email that can be reviewed and released, or blocked as needed.

Curbing Spam Proliferation

In the last year a growing number of spam operations have employed unsuspecting open relays to send spam. This practice often goes unnoticed by the IT staff until problems, such as server overload or blacklisting, disrupts regular email communication.

"The Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition ensures that the company is not an accidental open relay for spammers," said Drako.

In addition, the Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition uses advanced rate control features to thwart Zombie PCs and alert the IT staff of the affected organization any time a large quantity of email attempts to leave the network. The hijacked machine can then be shut down before the bulk of spam is sent.

Pricing and Availability

Available in five models of varying email capacities, the Barracuda Spam Firewall -- Outbound Edition is currently available with prices ranging from $1,399 to $19,999, with no per user licensing fees.
