Freescale Proves 3G Leadership with First Ultra High Speed HSPDA-Ready Platform
AUSTIN, Texas --(Business Wire)-- Feb. 13, 2005 -- Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B)
Company showcases UMTS/EDGE products, 3G MXC architecture and DVB-H Mobile TV platforms at 3GSM World Congress
Consumers soon will be able to download streaming video in seconds rather than minutes with high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) enabled wireless devices. They will also enjoy increased content storage space and fewer delays when using fast interactive applications for mobile multimedia.
Next week at 3GSM in Cannes, France, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B) -- the leader in UMTS platforms and HSDPA technology -- will demonstrate HSDPA-ready third-generation UMTS platforms up to 3.6Mbps. This platform transforms streaming audio and video into interactive download experiences, as well as mobile gaming and Internet access into instant mobile gratification. The i.300-30 platform is the first dual-mode EDGE class 12 capable tri-band WCDMA, quad-band GSM solution for world travelers. The platform runs on Linux(R) and Symbian(TM) operating systems and includes world-class power amplifier and power management technology for fewer dropped calls and longer battery life cost effectively for manufacturers.
This 3G platform includes the first StarCore(R) DSP and ARM11(TM) on CMOS90 technology, with plans to migrate to 65nm by the end of the year. The i.300-30 platform is dual-core modem or single-core modem capable and implements the same fundamental hardware components as the MXC architecture, providing seamless migration to the advanced features of MXC for 3G.
Making the concept of seamless mobility a reality, the i.300-30 platform also includes a wide range of connectivity capabilities including: Universal Serial Bus (USB) On-the-go (OTG), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Digital Video Broadcast for Handhelds (DVB-H) and Bluetooth(TM) wireless technology.
"We are currently sampling our HSDPA hardware with an alpha customer," said Franz Fink, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale's wireless business. "In addition, we are showcasing the Mobile Extreme Convergence (MXC) platform not only for EDGE, but for 3G platforms, continuing our legacy of breakthrough innovation to help our customers take the next critical step and enter a new dimension of handset design and development."
In addition to the HSDPA-enabled i.300-30 platform and MXC 3G Momentum demos, Freescale plans to demonstrate a number of leading technologies, including: -0- *T -- Multimode: Mobile Extreme Convergence - sampling with customers, Freescale's Mobile Extreme Convergence MXC275-30 platform is engineered to turn virtually any product into a mobile cellular device. The size of a postage-stamp, MXC uses considerably less memory than current dual-core platforms by using a shared memory approach and optimized cache environment coupled with the first combined single core modem and high performance application processor on a 90-nm IC. For more details go to: www.freescale.com/mxc. Freescale will be showcasing its PDA-sized DVB-H solution for mobile television. Freescale's DVB-H solution enables easy, cost-effective mobile connectivity solutions for consumers. -- Miniaturization: RF subsystems, power management and user interface solutions and power amplifier (PA) modules are optimized for performance, size, ease of use and cost. Freescale helps to reduce the number of module components and simplifies wireless radio front-end design. The RF subsystems have been optimized to reduce time-to-market by slashing the complexity of the radio software and minimizing the amount of factory calibration with Freescale's revolutionary Polar architecture. These subsystems also contain the world's first DigRF compliant radio allowing for maximum flexibility in pairing the RF subsystem with any semiconductor company's baseband. Such solutions leverage Freescale's radio expertise in RF and power amplifier technologies. -- Multimedia: Mobile multimedia applications powered by Freescale over 3G are being demonstrated on the Motorola A1000, C975 and V980 phones. Two-way videoconferencing, multimedia streaming, MP3 capture and playback, MPEG4 movie downloads and full HTML web browsing with small screen rendering are featured on the Freescale 3G platform. In addition, video and voice over IP two-way conferencing and 3D graphics capability is being demonstrated on Freescale's i.MX21 applications processor and eXtreme Energy Conservation power management on an ARM11 applications processor.
