In Support of National Consumer Protection Week, Biometrics Experts from AuthenTec to Demonstrate Ways to Reduce Identity Theft at National Press Club in Washington, DC February 7-11
WASHINGTON --(Business Wire)-- Feb. 2, 2005 -- Media looking for new sources and story angles for National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) - focused this year on identity theft and protection -- can access live demonstrations and interviews next week at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. with leading experts on biometric technology, which has emerged as one of the most convenient forms of security for consumer electronics. Biometric fingerprint sensors help reduce electronic theft and fraud by locking out intruders. The sensors provide advanced security and replace passwords and PINs - which can be lost, forgotten, or stolen.
Representatives from AuthenTec - whose biometric fingerprint sensors are used in more than 3 million PCs, peripherals and cell phones worldwide - will be at the National Press Club February 7-11 to provide media interviews, product demonstrations, contacts at biometric solution providers, industry research and reports, as well as graphics and B-roll video.
Some of the issues AuthenTec can discuss/demonstrate include:
-- The newest consumer, business and government applications featuring fingerprint biometrics. More than 100 biometric products exist today.
-- The latest in biometric market and consumer trends -- such as why fingerprint biometrics is the fastest growing segment of biometrics, and a nationwide survey that shows U.S. consumers want biometrics in PC and wireless devices.
-- Advances in technology - solutions are smaller than a pencil point, cost under $5, and are extremely accurate.
-- The future of biometrics. What is next? What types of applications will follow?
National Consumer Protection Week Background
The seventh annual National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) highlights consumer protection and education efforts around the country. This year's theme, "Identity Theft: When Fact Becomes Fiction," focuses on minimizing the risk of identity theft and taking fast action to contain any harm. For more information about NCPW, visit www.consumer.gov/ncpw.
Identity Theft Background
A 2004 survey commissioned by the Federal Trade Commission revealed that an estimated 27 million Americans have been victims of identity theft crime in the last five years, nearly 10 million in the last year alone. Routine transactions - which occur increasingly online -- reveal bits of information about a person, to potentially criminal audiences. Knowing how to safeguard information can help minimize the risk of becoming a victim of identity theft. In fact, one in six Americans say they have bought a privacy product to avoid identity theft, check their credit report, or surf or shop online anonymously, according to a 2003 survey by Harris Interactive.
AuthenTec Background
AuthenTec has more than 3 million fingerprint sensors already in use in the PC, wireless, and access control markets. AuthenTec's award-winning product families have made fingerprint biometrics viable for mass-market adoption. The company's network of partners, solution providers and customers include; Analog Devices, APC, Computer Associates, IBM, LGE, Microsoft, Samsung, and Texas Instruments.
