Baptist Memorial Health Care Selects COPAN Systems' Revolution 200T for Backup, Disaster Recovery and Archive; Customer Reports Successful Backups with a 30% Increase in Speed and Greater Affordability

LONGMONT, Colo. --(Business Wire)-- April 26, 2005 -- Plans to Continue Expanding Implementation of COPAN Systems Over Next 18 Months

COPAN Systems, the provider of complete storage solutions that unlock the value of long-term data, today announced that Baptist Memorial Health Care selected COPAN Systems' Revolution 200T to provide a scalable disk-based solution for backup, disaster recovery and archive applications. The Revolution 200T is the industry's first full implementation of a MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disks) architecture, combining the reliability and responsiveness of disk with the scalability and affordability of tape.

Baptist is one of the largest not-for-profit organizations in the US with 15 hospitals, approximately $2 billion in gross revenues and 12,000 employees. The organization needed a fast and reliable alternative to tape for the backup/recovery, disaster recovery protection and long-term archive storage of its records, including billing data, clinical documentation, electronic patient health and radiology imaging.

"The ability to consistently and successfully backup and recover data quickly and without incident is a mission-critical challenge, particularly in the medical field," said Hal Weiss, System Engineer at Baptist. "Throughout our review process, COPAN Systems' Revolution 200T consistently rose to the top of our list with superior performance, impressive scalability and predictability, all at an extremely affordable price point. When you add in COPAN's simple integration process and small footprint, the choice was obvious."

With a 300% annual increase in patient data that needed to be protected, according to standards such as the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA), Baptist found that backing up 4.5 TBs of data in over 17 million files to tape was too slow and did not meet Baptist's high standards. The organization also needed the ability to scale in tandem with its continuous growth and expansion, provide a disaster recovery plan with replication between sites, and deliver an archiving platform for compliance with regulatory requirements.

After evaluating a number of storage vendors, Baptist concluded that only the MAID-based Revolution 200T could provide the necessary scale, particularly for its tremendous email archiving requirements and picture archive. In addition the Revolution 200T provides the speed and affordability needed to meet their backup/recovery and disaster recovery requirements. Finally, the Revolution 200T offers an affordable solution that takes up far less floor space and draws less power than tape or any other disk-based solution.

In the two months since implementing the Revolution 200T, Baptist has realized 100% backup success and a 30% increase in backup speed.

"Baptist's decision to implement the Revolution 200T signals the growing awareness among medical organizations of the benefits that the COPAN MAID platform can deliver," said Dave Davenport, President and CEO of COPAN Systems. "Baptist Memorial Health Care approached this decision from a perspective of solving current, as well as future challenges of long-term data storage. They take a very assertive approach to new technology in order to stay in front of the demands placed on their IT organization by new medical technologies. Today, Baptist uses COPAN Systems solutions for 50% of total backups; and they expect to continue expanding their implementation of COPAN over the next 18 months."

About the Revolution 200T

COPAN Systems' Revolution 200T delivers massively scalable, reliable, and responsive disk-based solutions to backup/recovery and archive applications at an affordable cost point. The Revolution 200T MAID platform is implemented with over a dozen patent-pending technologies that provide unique benefits and advantages to customers. These technologies include a three-tier system architecture, POWER MANAGED RAID(TM) software, DISK AEROBICS(TM) software and unique disk drive packaging, cooling and vibration management. The result is enterprise class management and data availability, delivering disk-level performance, with substantially reduced footprint, power, and cooling requirements, versus traditional always-on disk arrays.
