Green Hills Software Introduces Next Generation In-Car Infotainment Reference Platform; Reliable, Scalable and Cost Effective Platform for Automotive OEMs

DETROIT --(Business Wire)-- April 11, 2005 -- Green Hills Software, Inc., the technology leader in embedded software development tools and real-time operating systems, today announced its reference platform for next generation in-car infotainment systems. Green Hills Software will demonstrate the Infotainment Reference Platform at the SAE World Congress in Detroit, April 11-14, 2005, in booth 2219.

The Infotainment Reference Platform consists of a complete set of infotainment application middleware integrated with Green Hills Software's royalty-free embedded real-time operating systems (RTOS), the velOSity microkernel and INTEGRITY RTOS, and running on an infotainment hardware reference design. Green Hills Software has partnered with other leading industry suppliers to assemble and integrate the reference platform, which includes speech recognition, text-to-speech, echo cancellation, noise reduction, Bluetooth, GPS, navigation, MP3 decoding, graphics and more. By providing a functional, integrated starting point, Green Hills Software allows developers of infotainment system software to focus on value-added development, reducing time-to-market and increasing the development time that can be devoted to application-level differentiation.

"Since the widespread adoption of 32-bit processors for automotive use more than ten years ago, Green Hills Software has provided leading automotive manufacturers and suppliers with best-in-class software development solutions," said Dan Mender, director of business development at Green Hills Software. "We have developed strong partnerships with leading silicon, design tool and middleware suppliers to jointly offer the best integrated solutions for the infotainment market."

"By delivering complete infotainment reference solutions for our customers, Analog Devices with Green Hills Software accelerates product time-to-market while reducing risk," said Mike Haidar, general manager, Software and Systems Technology, Digital Signal Processing Systems Division, Analog Devices, Inc. "Analog Devices' Blackfin processor, with its support for memory protection capabilities when running Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY operating system, enables the high levels of reliability and security required by automotive systems."

Operating Systems Optimized for Next-Generation Infotainment Requirements

The velOSity microkernel and INTEGRITY RTOS, the foundation of Green Hills Software's Infotainment Reference Platform, are well-suited to the requirements of infotainment applications.

Reliability and Security

Reliability and security are essential to next-generation infotainment systems. With multiple applications running on a single processor, such as navigation and telephony, a failure in one component cannot bring down another. In addition, as open interfaces such as Bluetooth and WiFi are incorporated, the car must be protected from viruses and hackers.

The INTEGRITY RTOS has unmatched reliability and security credentials. It is the only commercially available, partitioned operating system that has been used in applications certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the highest level required for flight-critical avionics systems. The INTEGRITY RTOS has also been designed into systems for the U.S. government that require the highest level of security certification.

The INTEGRITY RTOS provides applications with total reliability and absolute security by taking advantage of memory protection and secure partitioning, which guarantees each task the resources it needs to run correctly along with fully protecting the operating system and user tasks from errant and malicious code, including viruses, hackers and denial-of-service attacks.

Low Manufacturing Cost

Both the velOSity microkernel and INTEGRITY RTOS are royalty-free, and thus impose no per-unit manufacturing cost. In addition, their small footprint and scalable architecture minimize the amount of memory that must be included in a design.

High Performance

Infotainment applications require high performance both to satisfy real-time performance requirements as well as to maximize the functionality that can be supported without requiring a faster, more expensive processor.

To meet real-time requirements, both the velOSity microkernel and INTEGRITY RTOS are built using an innovative architecture that never disables interrupts in systems calls, for the fastest possible interrupt response time. In addition, both operating systems have fast boot times, which can be under 20 milliseconds, allowing systems to respond to the stringent requirements of the in-car buses.

Availability and Pricing

Green Hills Software's Infotainment Reference Platform is available today from Green Hills Software and its partners for the Analog Devices Blackfin Car Telematics Platform (CTP). Future support is planned for other hardware reference designs.

Development licenses for the velOSity microkernel start at $9,500 USD and development licenses for the INTEGRITY RTOS start at $15,000 USD. Both operating systems are royalty-free.
