New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer Keynotes Investorside Research Association Conference Along With Top U.S. Independent Researchers

WASHINGTON, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer headlines an all-star line up of independent research analysts at the second annual Independents' Day Conference in New York. The conference, entitled "Leverage the Independent Edge in a Competitive Institutional Market" will be held at the Waldorf Astoria, 301 Park Avenue (between 49th and 50th), next Wednesday, April 13th.

Attorney General Spitzer's investigation of the full service brokerage and investment banking firms was the driving force in the creation of the Global Settlement in 2002 in which the firms were required to utilize more independent research along with in-house proprietary research. Investors needed to have access to research in which investment banking opportunities and investment research were separated and not subject to potential conflicts of interest. Two years later, the question is, do investors have access to enough independent research?
Anne Anderson, president of Atlantis Research, made history when she alone among research analysts, recommended a "sell" on Oxford Health back in the 1990s (see attached news clip.) Now at a time when many analysts are pointing to the real estate market as overheated and similar to the tech bubble that drove investment in the '90's and then punctured investors' portfolios brutally, Anderson will highlight Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) as a growth income vehicle for investors. Many people do not realize that there are now seven REITs in the S&P 500, that 28 REITs delivered a total return of more than 200 percent in the last five years. Anderson will analyze the performance of REITs over the last five years and help investors understand where REITs fit in today's portfolios. Are REITs the new darling of the real estate craze or a foolish gambit in an overheated industry?
Meanwhile, Albert Lin of American Technology Research will provide the overview of the telecom industry. One of Lin's most controversial reports forecast the rebound of the cellular industry ahead of his peers, and he is expected to touch on such topics as: Is there a substantial market for cellular phones beyond voice communications? Could your cable company become your phone company and vice versa? The lines are blurring between communications services, while Congress and the Federal Communications Commission struggle to define what regulation still fits which services, and how to pave the way for the communications system of the 21st century.
