Blister Entertainment Launches North America's First GPS Cell Phone Game: Calgary, Alberta, Company Quickly Becoming a Leader in Location-Based Entertainment
CALGARY, Alberta --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 28, 2004 -- Blister Entertainment Inc., a division of KnowledgeWhere Corp., has turned the world into a virtual ocean and cell phones into fishing rods with the launch of "Swordfish," North America's first GPS-based cell phone game.
Recently released on Bell Mobility's network across Canada, Swordfish uses satellite technology and KnowledgeWhere's proprietary Location Application Platform to scan for and locate virtual schools of swordfish. Players become part of the game and must move to where the fish are located. Then using their cell phone like a fishing rod, they try to hook and land the big one, and compete with other players to make the national high score leader board.
"Blister and KnowledgeWhere are at the forefront of location-based entertainment and creating a new category within the worldwide mobile entertainment industry," said Paul Poutanen, President of Blister Entertainment.
Together Blister and KnowledgeWhere are working toward developing many location-based entertainment products for wireless carriers around the world. Blister's licensed products are designed with one thing in common - location, and supported by an array of technologies that drive location-based entertainment.
"Blister brings tremendous value to wireless carriers who are looking for products and services that can increase data traffic on their networks," said Poutanen. "As well, Blister's location-based entertainment products offer third-party brands a new marketing opportunity by providing greater exposure or incentives to gamers who are locating virtual "brand name" objects with their GPS-equipped cell phones."
Mobile entertainment revenues are forecast to grow to $25.1 billion worldwide by 2007. This growth will largely be driven by the games sector, which is forecast to have a compounded annual growth rate of 60 per cent, achieving revenue of $7.4 billion by 2007.
