Frost & Sullivan Names Alien Technology Corporation 2004 Entrepreneurial Company of the Year in Wireless Radio Frequency Identification Market

LAS VEGAS --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 28, 2004 -- Frost & Sullivan will recognize the cost-effective radio frequency identification (RFID) solutions and exceptional manufacturing capabilities demonstrated by Alien Technology Corporation at tonight's Excellence in Mobile Communications Awards Banquet by presenting the company with the 2004 Entrepreneurial Company of the Year Award.

The Award honors a company that has identified a unique product solution that has a high probability of reaching its potential in the next two to five years. It also recognizes a company's marketing plans and strategic alliances for distribution, its relationships with key customers, and its reputation within the media and among industry experts.

Formed in 1995, Alien(R) is a privately held company. It has received funding support from investors including Advanced Equities Inc., CMEA Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Rho Ventures, and Sevin-Rosen, and has also benefited from strategic investments from a number of partners and customers.

Alien specializes in markets that involve high volumes of low cost tags. Key application areas include supply chain, logistics, baggage handling, and retail tagging, especially in the pharmaceuticals segment.

"Alien's Fluidic Self Assembly (FSA(R)) manufacturing technology allows it to offer high quality RFID tags at the most competitive prices," says Karthik Nagarajan, research analyst with Frost & Sullivan. "FSA is uniquely capable of handling Alien's tiny NanoBlock(R) integrated chip (IC) designs."

Developed by the research team at the University of California, Berkeley, FSA allows the packaging and assembly into RFID tags of ICs less than 0.5mm on a side, in very large volumes. This is significant because at that size, the IC can reach costs below a penny, and RFID tags can approach costs of five cents and less. Alien has been refining and enhancing the FSA design for the last seven years and the technology is expected to play a defining role in the future growth of the company.

Alien has completed successful pilot projects with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for its item-tagging project where it demonstrated the feasibility of its RFID solution. In the near future, the company is likely to be involved in as many as five to ten airline baggage tagging projects.

"With a strong foothold in the key markets and with continuing support from its investors and partners, the company is rapidly emerging as a force to reckon with," observes Nagarajan. "In its future in the industry, Alien is likely to concentrate more on the development of tags with smaller silicon, at a lower manufacturing cost, enabled by the FSA innovation."

Held in Las Vegas, Frost & Sullivan's 2004 Excellence in Mobile Communications Awards Banquet honors world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in wireless and mobile strategy, technology, platforms, and services. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
