Zhone Expands Triple Play over Fiber Carrier Solutions with New PON ONU Supporting IP Video

OAKLAND, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 28, 2004 -- Zhone Residential Gateway 800 Series Lowers Cost of Service Delivery by Distributing Voice Data and Video over Existing Home Wiring

Zhone Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ZHNE), the first company dedicated to developing the full spectrum of next-generation local loop infrastructure solutions, today announced the addition of IP Video decoders in the new 800 series PON ONU, enhancing its comprehensive suite of Zhone Residential Gateway (ZRG) products.

The ZRG is a family of unique customer premises devices that allow telephone companies to provide triple play voice, data and video and entertainment services to their subscribers. The 800 series ZRG models integrate video decoders, derived voice and data routing functions in compact easy-to-deploy configurations for installation either inside or outside the home. ZRG uniquely integrates IP video decoders allowing carriers to deliver multiple video streams to televisions throughout the home using existing in-home coax wiring. Use of in-home wiring allows carriers to provide competitive services, by not only eliminating costly, disruptive and time consuming recabling, but by also eliminating the need for external set top boxes or modems.

As the newest branch of the ZRG family, 800 series models are available with either RF or IP video distribution providing carriers with flexibility in both their deployment and service offerings. Integrated IP video decoders allow video to be delivered over in-home coax cable to up to four TV sets. Video delivery over Ethernet using third-party set-top boxes is also available as an option. RF video employs B-PON (ITU-T G.983.3 Enhancement Band RF) signals, demodulated at the ZRG for delivery over coax to subscriber TVs.

Zhone Technologies' ZRG family includes complete PON Optical Network Terminal/Units (ONT/ONU) for use in fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) or copper based units for fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) networks. All models feature integrated voice functions with up to four lines of POTS service using either VoATM or VoIP, with standard SIP or MGCP signaling. A 2-port 10/100B-T Ethernet interface with advanced IP features provides direct access to Internet and private data services on one port, with a separate port providing IP video services to high-end external set top boxes. Optional integrated IP video decoders provide carriers the ability to service up to four TVs throughout the home, thereby eliminating the need for set-top boxes. Eight-hour battery backup is available to ensure lifeline POTS even in the event of a power outage.

"Carriers are looking to improve the economics of their triple play offerings of premium TV, broadband Internet access and multi-featured telephony services," said Steve Rogers, vice president of product management for Zhone. "Zhone's Residential Gateway and the addition of the new ZRG 800 models allow carriers to deliver more bundled services over copper or fiber while reducing deployment and operations costs."

Zhone's triple play architecture is standards compliant adhering to FS-VDSL's reference design and supporting IP in the home and standards based IGMP for rapid channel changing. Both MALC and ZRG have been designed and tested for interoperability with access and gateway platforms from other leading equipment suppliers.

In conjunction with Zhone's flagship Multi-Access Line Concentrator (MALC), the ZRG can provide multicast and unicast streams to video devices in subscribers' homes in intelligent routed configurations using IGMP proxy, or bridged configurations with IGMP snooping. Protocol and device-level filtering provides security for tiered services and anti-piracy protection.

All ZRG models operate under common management and control with the OSMINE-certified MALC allowing services to be installed, enabled, and managed as well as maintained, to minimize service interruption and enhance customer satisfaction. Network, subscribers and services are managed with the Zhone Management System (ZMS) a common flow-through provisioning and management platform that integrates into existing OSS systems.

Zhone is delivering on the promise of its protocol and media agnostic SLMS architecture. Zhone's SLMS now supports the broadest range of both copper or fiber interfaces, supporting TDM, IP or ATM protocols with uplinks including T1/E1 IMA, DS3, E3, OC-3, STM-1, OC-12, STM-4, 10bT, 100bT, and GigE. Enhanced features include support for Conditional Access, Video-on-Demand and integrated interactive services for the most complete and competitive service offering available to carriers today.
