Atempo Announces Mailbox Manager; Information Lifecycle Management Solution for Exchange Environments Cuts Storage Costs, Improves Productivity and Enables Regulatory Compliance
PALO ALTO, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 27, 2004 -- Atempo, Inc., a leader in information lifecycle management strategies for data protection, today announced Atempo Mailbox Manager(TM) for Microsoft Exchange. Mailbox Manager is an ILM solution that helps companies manage the rapidly-rising volume of e-mail, reduce storage costs and increase productivity, while helping them comply with growing regulatory demands to retain internal and external communications.
The typical corporate worker sends and receives 10 megabytes of e-mail daily, which increases e-mail storage needs in a 1000-person company by 10 gigabytes per day. E-mail systems aren't designed for storing huge volumes of messages; retaining all e-mail on a server degrades performance, increases the risk of data corruption, increases backup/recovery times and occupies the most expensive storage available.
Atempo Mailbox Manager for Exchange automates the management, archiving and retrieval of e-mail messages. The software is based on technology from iLumin Software Services, Inc. Its key functions and benefits include:
-- Automatically migrates e-mail and attachments from expensive Exchange servers onto low-cost disk storage
-- Enables policy-based management of e-mail retention, migration and eventual deletion
-- Enables compliance with regulatory and legal requirements for retaining internal communications
-- Lowers the total cost of ownership of e-mail systems
-- Seamlessly integrates with Exchange servers and Microsoft Outlook clients to reduce costs, management complexity and end-user training needs
-- Reduces time demands on users and administrators by eliminating mailbox cleanup
-- Offers dramatic time savings in recovering old or 'lost' e-mail, letting end-users themselves retrieve archived e-mail from within Outlook
-- Delivers higher reliability, higher performance, faster backup and faster restore
"Companies today are struggling to manage the exploding volume of corporate e-mail," said Francois Gauthier, Atempo's chief technology officer. "With Mailbox Manager, companies gain control over how e-mail is managed, archived and retrieved, and are able to ensure compliance with the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape."
Cost Savings through Storage Optimization
To control costs and storage overhead, firms typically enforce e-mail quotas, requiring users to spend significant time deleting messages or moving them into personal stores (PST files) on their local hard drives. PST files consume two to five times more physical storage than Exchange, are prone to data corruption, often aren't backed up, and can't be easily accessed and searched.
Mailbox Manager eliminates the need for mailbox quotas or local PST files. It significantly cuts overhead costs by reducing growth of expensive storage, reducing the size of archived content by more than 50%, and allowing consolidation of file servers and software licenses.
Regulatory Compliance and Internal Policy Compliance
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act and other new regulations require companies to implement systems for retaining electronic communications. Companies are also required to retain documents under regulations governing the financial, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and defense industries, among others. The new rules have left companies scrambling for cost-effective ways to comply.
In addition, in this litigious age, document discovery is imposing growing costs and time demands on corporations. In a court of law, the inability to produce subpoenaed electronic documents due to inadequate retention policies is not an accepted defense. Mailbox Manager ensures that documents remain available in a centrally-managed archive, where they can be rapidly identified and retrieved through full-text searching and searching by age, entity tagging, header information and other criteria. Access to the corporate archive can be limited to designated users.
Policy-Based Management
While traditional products backup and restore e-mail on the mailbox level, Mailbox Manager works on the message level, delivering far more control and flexibility. Its powerful rules engine allows administrators to set retention and migration policy for e-mail by user, group, sender, recipient, message age, size, or other criteria. The software archives all messages, even those immediately deleted by a user. Existing PST files can be quickly brought under management, as Mailbox Manager discovers and imports these files during implementation.
The Time Navigator Data Protection Platform
Mailbox Manager is available as a standalone offering or as an integrated part of Atempo's comprehensive Information Lifecycle Management suite, Time Navigator(TM). It complements Time Navigator for Exchange, which offers mailbox-level data protection and disaster recovery, letting companies recover Exchange databases after a crash and recover mailboxes after a deletion.
Availability
The product will be available in October 2004.
