California Competitive Phone Companies Invest $1.78 Billion
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Association of Competitive Telecommunications Companies (CALTEL) has released an update to a recent survey of the state's competitive telephone companies. The new information bolsters previous findings that the competitive telecommunications sector of the California economy is a significant source of investment and new jobs.
According to the new results, competitive companies surveyed pumped $1.78 billion into the California economy in 2003. Since 1996, that total is over $18.17 billion. Half of the companies evaluated increased their investment in 2003 over the previous year.
"Competitive phone companies continue to make significant investments in California," said John Sumpter, chairman of CALTEL. "We expect that trend to continue if regulators give competition a vote of confidence this month."
The updated findings indicate that given a stable regulatory environment, under current CPUC rules, 80 percent of survey respondents would invest still more in 2004, at an average of 60 percent more than 2003 figures.
Competitive phone companies invested approximately $32 million per market share percentage point, nearly three times as much as SBC.
"We hope that regulators in California and in Washington D.C. will take note of the contributions competitive telecom companies are making to the economy," said Sarah DeYoung, CALTEL's executive director. "Competitors are opening offices in California, buying switches, hiring employees. Evidence is mounting that competitive phone companies invest and employ more per line served than the big monopolies."
Survey respondents employ 9,119 California residents, and 58 percent of CALTEL members are headquartered in California. The survey looked at a cross- section of competitive phone companies, comprised of a range of company sizes, service and product offerings, and geographical service areas within California.
