Zhone Enhances Triple Play over Copper Carrier Solutions with New ADSL2+ Devices and Integrated IP Video Decoders
OAKLAND, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Oct. 11, 2004 -- Zhone Residential Gateway 600 Series Lowers Cost of Service Delivery by Distributing Voice Data and Video over Existing Home Wiring
Zhone Technologies, Inc., the first company dedicated to developing the full spectrum of next-generation local loop infrastructure solutions, today announced the addition of the new Zhone Residential Gateway (ZRG) 600 series with ADSL2+ support, enhancing its comprehensive suite of ZRG products.
The ZRG is a unique family of customer premises devices that allow telephone companies to provide triple play voice, data, video and interactive entertainment services to their subscribers over copper or fiber. Zhone's ZRG uniquely combine features and installation options to significantly reduce deployment and operations costs.
With support for ADSL2+, Zhone's new ZRG 600 series greatly simplifies carriers' abilities to reach more customers with triple play services. This new technology allows carriers to deliver downstream data rate services at rates of up to 24 Mbps and upstream data at rates of up to 3 Mbps providing ample bandwidth for both multiple standard definition video as well as high definition streams. Subscribers beyond the standard serving area also benefit from extended reach capabilities, creating new revenue opportunities as carriers are able to capture new broadband subscribers and deliver new bundled services including packet voice and IP video.
The ZRG integrates video decoders, derived voice and data routing functions in compact easy-to-deploy configurations that can be installed either in the home or outdoors in a hardened NID enclosure. By uniquely integrating IP video decoders, ZRG eliminates the need for set-top boxes and speeds installation by allowing carriers to deliver multiple video streams to televisions throughout the home using existing in-home coax wiring. Use of in-home wiring allows carriers to provide competitive voice, data and video services, not only by eliminating costly, disruptive and time consuming recabling, but also by eliminating the inconvenience of in-home installation and service calls.
"Since its introduction over a year ago, Zhone's ZRG has received accolades from carriers, press and analysts for its demonstrated ability to cost-effectively deliver voice, data and video service bundles," said Steve Rogers, vice president of product management for Zhone. "The addition of ADSL2+ allows carriers to double the bandwidth previously available to their subscribers, while dramatically improving reach, throughput, price, density, and power requirements."
In conjunction with the 48-port ADSL2+ line card on Zhone's flagship Multi-Access Line Concentrator (MALC), the ZRG can provide IP multicast and unicast streams to video devices in subscribers' homes in intelligent routed configurations using IGMP proxy, or bridged configurations with IGMP snooping. Protocol and device-level filtering provides security for tiered services and anti-piracy protection.
Zhone's standards-compliant triple play architecture adheres to FS-VDSL's reference design and supports IP in the home and standards-based IGMP for rapid channel changing. Both MALC and ZRG have been designed and tested for interoperability with access and gateway platforms from other leading equipment suppliers.
"As broadband operators become true full-service providers -- offering voice, video and data -- they will benefit from integrated solutions that reduce deployment and operations costs," said Kelly Smith, vice president of business development for Myrio. "Myrio and Zhone have collaborated to deliver flexible turnkey carrier solutions that simplify the process of deploying advanced video services supporting the most desired applications such as digital TV, pay-per-view, video-on-demand, personal video recording, Web access and more. This unified effort will help drive mass deployment of broadband video."
Zhone Technologies' ZRG family includes both copper and fiber based devices for use in fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) or fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) networks. All models feature integrated voice functions with up to four lines of POTS service using either VoATM or VoIP, with standard SIP or MGCP signaling. A 2-port 10/100B-T Ethernet interface with advanced IP features provides direct access to Internet and private data services on one port, with a separate port providing IP video services to high-end external set-top boxes. Optional integrated IP video decoders provide carriers the ability to service up to four TVs throughout the home, thereby eliminating the need for costly set-top boxes and Ethernet wiring. Eight-hour battery backup is available to ensure lifeline POTS even in the event of a power outage.
All ZRG models operate under common management and control with the OSMINE-certified MALC allowing services to be installed, enabled, and managed as well as maintained, to minimize service interruption and enhance customer satisfaction. Network, subscribers and services are managed with the Zhone Management System (ZMS), a common flow-through provisioning and management platform that integrates into existing OSS systems.
Zhone is delivering on the promise of its protocol and media agnostic SLMS architecture. Zhone's SLMS now supports the broadest range of both copper or fiber interfaces, supporting TDM, IP or ATM protocols with uplinks including T1/E1 IMA, DS3, E3, OC-3, STM-1, OC-12, STM-4, 10bT, 100bT, and GigE. Enhanced features include support for Conditional Access, Video-on-Demand and integrated interactive services for the most complete and competitive service offering available to carriers today.
