Rubin Museum of Art Selects BTP for Computer Network Solutions and Technology Relocation of Back Office

NEW YORK, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rubin Museum of Art (RMA), a new museum of Himalayan art scheduled to open in October 2004, has selected technology consulting firm Business Technology Partners (http://www.btp.net/) to design and manage the implementation of its LAN/WAN, server and desktop systems.

Located on the site of the former Barney's department store (150 West 17th, off of 7th Avenue), the five-story museum houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Himalayan art in the world. RMA has approximately 25,000 square feet of gallery space, a classroom and a theater for performances and events.
Business Technology Partners, which is helping to transform the space into a state-of-the-art facility, provided its project management services in overseeing the implementation of the LAN/WAN, desktop and server environment. Part of BTP's scope of work is to review, select and manage the multitude of vendors, which include Dell, Foundry, Tasman, and Cisco.
The network design entails separate VLAN's for different user groups, the security system, and the point of sale operations. It also includes a point-to-point T-1 connection to their satellite office to provide WAN connectivity and full network access. The Museum's security system, provided by Idesco, and the point of sale system from Gateway Ticketing Systems, Inc., each require networked PC's on dedicated VLANs isolated from the general RMA LAN. BTP isolated these LANs by configuring dedicated ports on the relevant switches and configuring the RMA routers to steer security system traffic out to the Internet as necessary. Other BTP project management tasks include equipment inspection, configuration of the VLAN's/routing tables, and confirmation of the functionality between the Router and Firewall. BTP also saw to it that the Museum configured all of its servers for automatic shutdown and established backup and Antivirus procedures. Additionally, BTP provided network support for Inter-tel's Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone implementation.
BTP is also overseeing the relocation of a number of users and equipment from a previous Museum office to the new RMA address. This entails archiving each user's data, moving their PC's, joining them to the new museum domain, reconfiguring their email, and ensuring that all desktop functionality is working. BTP enabled Macintosh support on the domain and upgraded all desktop PC's from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Professional and from Microsoft Office 2000 to Microsoft Office 2003. BTP is also providing ongoing network and desktop support through its Virtual MIS program.
According to Jacob Cane, Director of Applications & Distributed Systems, "RMA will operate supported by a technology backbone that incorporates some of the most up to date IT products and services in today's marketplace. Our work will make for a better viewing experience for all museum visitors and enable the Museum to showcase its work in the best possible way."
