UK's Largest Academic VoIP Network Uses Quintum's Tenor Switches to Connect 50,000 Students Across 28 Universities

EATONTOWN, N.J., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- VoIP market leader Quintum Technologies today announced that Keycom, a supplier of pre-paid telephony and Internet connection and services to university students in the United Kingdom, has successfully deployed Quintum's Tenor switching platform to provide voice services to over 50,000 students across 28 universities. As a result of the deployment, Keycom has reduced the cost basis of its voice services by almost 70 percent, enabling it to fully recoup its investment in less than six months.

Deployment of the Tenor switches across all locations took just six weeks and cost 600,000 pounds sterling ($1,075,000 USD). The project started off with a six-site pilot that proved so successful that it was expanded to the present number of locations. After validating the first few installations, Keycom's distributor, Techland Group, was then able to ship pre-configured switches to each location - where they were simply "plugged in" to the network by an on-site engineer.
Keycom selected Quintum's Tenor switches as its VoIP platform-of-choice after an extensive evaluation of competing products from Cisco, Pace and Storm.
"The critical criteria for us were channel aggregation, real-time PSTN failover and affordability," said Keycom Operations Manager Jon Richardson. "We also needed efficient packet handling to keep our bandwidth demands to a minimum since we are the only commercial organization that can connect directly to JANET, the UK's academic data network."
Keycom is a fully licensed telephony company with direct interconnect to all major UK and global voice carriers, and is also an Internet services provider (ISP). Keycom's pre-paid service helps students and their parents manage costs and avoid unexpectedly large end-of-month bills.
Keycom's annual operating costs were 200,000 pounds ($358,355 USD) at one campus alone before deployment of the Tenor switches. Replacement of voice and data infrastructure at that campus cost 50,000 pounds ($89,600 USD), and resulted in operating costs of just 20,000 pounds ($35,838 USD) per year - for a first-year savings of 130,000 pounds ($232,390 USD) and a two-year ROI of 520 percent.
These savings are being realized without any loss in call quality or reliability.
"We are very gratified to see our technology being used so effectively to improve the economics of voice services in the academic market," said Chuck Rutledge, Quintum's vice president of marketing. "The unique efficiency and simplicity of our Tenor platform has clearly enabled Keycom to take full advantage of the business opportunities offered by VoIP."
