Metrowerks Enables Development With Linux(TM) and Commercial Operating Systems for Newest ColdFire(R) Processor Families

AUSTIN, Texas, May 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Developers creating industrial controls and network connected products based on the latest ColdFire(R) processor families from Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola, Inc. , can leverage end-to-end development solutions from Metrowerks Corporation that support a variety of open source and commercial operating systems.

Metrowerks supports the integration of commercial real-time operating systems (RTOSes) into designs based on ColdFire technology with Version 5 of the Metrowerks CodeWarrior(TM) Development Studio for ColdFire Architectures. This release features an enhanced version of the CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE).
For embedded Linux OS developers planning to leverage the newest ColdFire architectures, Metrowerks offers CodeWarrior Development Studio for ColdFire ISA, Linux Platform Edition. The Linux Platform Edition provides commercial- grade Linux development solutions that streamline a full range of tasks including board bring-up, kernel-level debugging, driver development and application creation -- all within a Linux OS development environment.
Some of the newest ColdFire processor architectures feature memory management unit (MMU) functionality, which enables developers to incorporate embedded Linux technology into their designs based on ColdFire architectures. Metrowerks leverages the MMU technology by offering tools for embedded Linux OS application, driver and kernel development.
Metrowerks CodeWarrior Development Studio for ColdFire Architectures is designed to integrate with ARC's high performance MQX(TM) RTOS and many other world-class embedded operating systems to allow developers to incorporate commercial RTOS technologies into their ColdFire designs.
"The Metrowerks CodeWarrior Development Studio for ColdFire Architectures works seamlessly with the MQX(TM) RTOS, allowing developers to quickly and easily create new products that offer high levels of performance and reliability," said Jeri Ann May, marketing director, ARC Software.
Version 5 of the Metrowerks CodeWarrior Development Studio for ColdFire Architectures offers a robust development environment, including a high performance debugger that addresses challenges specific to developing within MMU-based semiconductor environments. The studio integrates with run control and code analysis tools from Metrowerks to provide a single environment for development -- from hardware and OS bring up to application creation and testing. In addition, the studio provides the following features and capabilities:
-- fast, intuitive programming of both on-chip and on-board FLASH memory;
-- integrated hardware diagnostics for board bring-up;
-- enhanced command window for complex scripting capabilities;
-- built-in software profiler for hot spot analysis;
-- enhanced editor for greater developer productivity.

The first Version 5 toolset will be the CodeWarrior(TM) Development Studio for MCF547x and MCF548x architectures, which will ship concurrent to availability of Freescale evaluation boards that support those processors.
Pricing
Version 5 of the Metrowerks CodeWarrior Development Studio for ColdFire Architectures is priced at $5,994 (USD) (price includes one year of support). CodeWarrior Development Studio for ColdFire ISA, Linux Platform Edition is priced at $5,395 (USD). Evaluation CDs of Version 5 of CodeWarrior Development Studio for ColdFire Architectures are available immediately to support the latest silicon from Freescale Semiconductor, and may be requested by contacting Metrowerks via phone at 800-377-5416 or +1-512-996-5300, or by e-mail at [email protected].
