Nortel Networks Enables Voice over Wireless LAN with New Wireless Networking Products
Customers Gain Enhanced Security, Deployment Options, Converged Applications

ORLANDO, Fla.--Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT - News; TSX:NT - News) today introduced new additions to its award-winning wireless local area networking (LAN) product portfolio, providing customers with opportunities to achieve new levels of productivity through converged wireless IP (Internet Protocol) telephony and choices in wireless LAN deployment.

"Whether customers want to leverage their existing infrastructure to increase networking capabilities or implement a new wireless LAN solution to support sophisticated converged applications, including voice over wireless LAN, our wireless LAN solutions allow them to maximize today's infrastructure while planning for tomorrow," said Malcolm Collins, president, Enterprise Networks, Nortel Networks. "Voice is the apex of applications. Being able to surpass the rigid requirements of extremely sensitive voice environments means other critical enterprise applications can be easily supported by our new wireless LAN solutions."

"We've been using Nortel Networks WLAN 2200 series to enhance the level of service we provide in our hospital," said Steve Noyes, director of Information and Communication Technology, Mount Sinai Hospital. "Security is of the utmost importance in our industry, and the extensive features of WLAN Security Switch 2250 alleviated any concerns we had about the security of wireless communications. We're very impressed by the quality of voice on Nortel Networks WLAN Handsets, and are looking forward to extending our converged LAN into a converged mobile LAN."

The new products introduced today add voice over wireless LAN capabilities to Nortel Networks WLAN 2200 series portfolio.

Voice over wireless LAN is provided by Nortel Networks WLAN Handsets 2210 and 2211 and Nortel Networks WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245. Nortel Networks WLAN Handsets 2210 and 2211, the smallest and lightest IP telephones available, provide robust coverage and clear voice quality for voice over wireless LAN applications. Leveraging the full feature set of the company's call servers, both handsets emulate Nortel Networks i2004 Internet Telephone, and WLAN Handset 2211 adds walkie talkie-style communications. These handsets deliver the full breadth of Nortel Networks telephony feature set in a portable IP device.

Nortel Networks WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245 optimizes the connection between handsets and the call server to support the exacting requirements of voice communications. It manages voice prioritization on the wireless network, thus minimizing latency, for a better end-user experience.

Even greater flexibility and enhanced productivity opportunities are provided by Nortel Networks WLAN Application Gateway 2246, which enables standards-based, third-party software applications to be integrated with wireless handsets. Examples of such applications are nurse-call systems in hospital wards, inventory system look-ups in retail and warehousing sites and control systems interactions in industrial and manufacturing facilities.

Nortel Networks new Adaptive WLAN deployment solution, provided by Nortel Networks WLAN Security Switch 2270 and Nortel Networks Access Ports 2230 and 2231, is optimized for delivering Wireless IP telephony and is ideal for new wireless LAN deployments.

Nortel Networks WLAN Security Switch 2270 provides advanced radio frequency (RF) specific functions that enable unprecedented control and security of the wireless LAN infrastructure to support voice traffic. WLAN Security Switch 2270 continuously analyzes RF information retrieved by WLAN Access Ports to enable provisioning of dynamic coverage. WLAN Security Switch 2270 also provides advanced security features, including unauthorized access point detection and containment. These features enable customers to improve return on investment based on lower operational and maintenance costs.

Nortel Networks WLAN Access Port 2230 supports 802.11 a/b/g radio standards and Nortel Networks WLAN Access Port 2231 is 802.11b/g-capable. Equipped with integrated sensors that continuously monitor the radio frequencies, they send reporting information to WLAN Security Switch 2270 to verify that the radio links and access ports are performing optimally, and provide location-based services like E-911. WLAN Access Ports 2230 and 2231 are auto-configurable, which allows customers to realize critical deployment and maintenance cost savings related to site surveys and RF analysis.

Today's announcement also adds a new product to the standalone and hybrid deployment options with Nortel Networks WLAN Access Point 2225. These modular access points provide a choice of coverage that enables customers to determine the RF standards they will use - 802.11 a, b/g or all three. These access points can accommodate external antennas to extend coverage and have the ability to double the data rate of the 802.11g radio frequency as well as accommodate new technologies required of future architectures.
