DataDirect Technologies to Enter the XQuery Market with Industry's Only Embeddable, Database-Independent Component for Processing XML and Relational Data

BEDFORD, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- June 28, 2004 -- DataDirect XQuery to Dramatically Simplify Data Exchange for Java Developers

DataDirect Technologies, the leading provider of components for connecting software to data, today announced the development of DataDirect XQuery(TM), an embeddable, standards-based software product that enables Java(TM) developers to access both relational and XML data sources using a single query. Built to accommodate XQuery, the new language for querying and creating XML documents, DataDirect XQuery will join DataDirect Technologies' comprehensive offering of data connectivity components to simplify application development, allow portability across databases and ease application deployment.

Primarily queried from relational databases, business-critical data is increasingly required to be exchanged and processed as either XML data, or a combination of XML data and relational data. Recognizing this, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has developed XQuery as a uniform language for data exchange. In the same way that SQL provides a query language for relational databases, XQuery will provide a common language for accessing both XML and relational data stores.

"XML continues to gain momentum as the standard for data integration and developers and IT managers are demanding a common query language to simplify the process," said Steve McClure, a research vice president in IDC's Software Research Group. "XQuery provides this common framework and will dramatically simplify and accelerate data integration projects."

DataDirect XQuery is based on a solid technical foundation combining data connectivity and XML expertise with long standing relationships with the world's top database vendors. With a deep understanding of product direction and the latest database versions and architecture modifications, DataDirect Technologies will offer the most advanced, database-independent and platform-agnostic XQuery engine available.

Jonathan Robie, XML Program Manager for DataDirect Technologies, is a member of the XQuery Working Group, the division of the W3C defining XQuery. As co-inventor of XQuery and editor of several of the XQuery specifications, Robie is helping establish the standard. He is also a member of the Expert Group that is defining XQJ, the standard API for Java applications to access XML sources that is expected to become final late in 2004.

"Most businesses store and query data with relational databases, but on the Web they use XML to exchange it or prepare it for display. Programmers need to deal with both kinds of data, often at the same time," said Robie. "DataDirect XQuery processes XML and relational data in the same way, making it very easy to combine data sources to create XML for data exchange or display in a browser."

DataDirect XQuery is scheduled to be available in the first half of 2005. A strategic beta program is scheduled to be available this fall.

DataDirect Technologies will exhibit at the JavaOne Conference in San Francisco June 28th through July 1st in booth #1425, where visitors can learn more about DataDirect XQuery.
