Tekelec, General Bandwidth Demonstrate Packet Voice Solution at Cable-Tec Expo
AUSTIN, Texas & MORRISVILLE, N.C. --(Business Wire)-- June 14, 2004 -- Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC) and General Bandwidth today announced that the companies are demonstrating a solution that facilitates cable operators' entry into cable telephony and enables rapid deployment of packet-voice services. The solution, which the two companies are co-marketing, is being showcased at Tekelec's booth (#911) during the Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, Fla., June 15-18, 2004.
Tekelec is a leading developer of telecommunications signaling, switching, and application solutions. General Bandwidth is a leading voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) equipment manufacturer, enabling rapid deployments of new revenue-generating services over broadband networks.
The joint solution provides cable operators with a proven, VoIP-based cable-telephony offering with carrier-class quality of service and a full set of Custom Local Area Signaling Services (CLASS). "As a result of the collaboration, operators can leverage existing investments in hybrid-fiber coax transport facilities and significantly reduce capital expenditures," explained Fred Lax, Tekelec president and CEO. "In addition, this partnership gives cable operators a significantly more cost-effective, integrated, and more manageable PacketCable(TM)-based solution that simplifies cable telephony deployments."
Designed for full compliance with CableLabs' PacketCable Network-based Control Signaling (NCS) and Line Control Signaling (LCS) specifications, the cable telephony solution delivers CLASS capabilities, including operator services, emergency 911 services, and lawful intercept capabilities.
Jon Arnold, VoIP equipment program leader for research firm Frost & Sullivan, added, "With more than 90 percent of U.S. cable homes now upgraded for two-way service, the voice over cable market is poised for unprecedented growth. Tekelec has positioned itself well to take advantage of this growth with circuit-to-packet implementations that address voice over cable. Today, the vast majority of the cable market is circuit switched; however, the momentum for VoIP is unquestionable. We believe VoIP will account for 82 percent of the North American cable voice market, which will triple in size over the next five years."
About the Tekelec-General Bandwidth Solution
The joint solution combines Tekelec's market-leading iX7000(TM) next-generation Class 5 switch with General Bandwidth's highly scalable G6(R) VoIP Media Gateway. Deployed by more than 100 North American service providers, Tekelec's iX7000 provides full-featured business and residential calling services in a compact, economical switch. General Bandwidth's G6 platform interworks signaling and voice traffic from the iX7000, providing a complete suite of telephony services over the cable operator's hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network. With the unique ability of the iX7000 and G6 platform to support both NCS and LCS architectures simultaneously, cable operators are able to upgrade and migrate customers to new services selectively.
The Tekelec-General Bandwidth solution seamlessly transitions from a PacketCable LCS to NCS architecture using existing voice networks. With the addition of a packet interface card, the Tekelec iX7000 switch serves as the call management server. The General Bandwidth G6 VoIP Media Gateway provides local, off-net connectivity to the public switched telephone network.
