CALTEL: Bush Administration OK's Higher Phone Rates Ruling
LOS ANGELES, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- CALTEL commented today on the announcement that the U.S. Solicitor General will not appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court a lower federal court ruling that struck down access by competitive companies to the nation's telecommunications network at reasonable rates.
The following statement may be attributed to Nikayla Nail Thomas executive director of CALTEL, the California Association of Competitive Telecommunications Companies.
"California consumers can pull out their checkbooks and add higher phone bills to the ledger along with their higher mortgage payments and rising prices at the pump. The Bush administration's top lawyer has opened the door to higher phone rates and put thousands of good California jobs and billions in new investments on the chopping block.
For the last two years, the California PUC has worked hard to open the local phone market to competition to the direct benefit of consumers. Unfortunately the Bush Administration seems content to undo that work and leave those choices and consumer savings by the wayside.
We applaud the California Public Utilities Commission for its decision to step in where the federal government wouldn't and appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to keep phone rates down. We're grateful to the Commission for standing up for California."
