SEATTLE --(Business Wire)-- June 2, 2004 -- With More than 1,000 Olympic Images Expected to be Captured Daily, Getty Images is Equipped to be the Leading Force in Olympic Coverage

Getty Images (NYSE:GYI), the world's leading imagery company, kicks off its coverage of the Olympic Games this week in Sydney, with the start of the Athens 2004 International Olympic Torch Relay on Friday, June 4. Chronicling the Relay over a period of 35 days, some of the company's most talented sports photographers will travel to 27 countries and 34 cities, producing images from all of the five continents represented. Once again partnering with the International Olympic Committee, Getty Images will capture the iconic Athens 2004 Olympic Games with the most experienced and award-winning staff of photographers it has ever amassed to cover the Games.

Continuing to gain recognition globally as one of the premier providers of news and sport photography, Getty Images will deploy 68 photographers and support team members to Athens who will work around the clock to generate an output of more than 1,000 images daily. The team includes some of the world's foremost photographers of track and field, boxing, aquatics, hockey, gymnastics and virtually all of the 35 sports represented in the Summer Games. The company's on-site technical experts will guarantee Getty Images' customers immediate access to compelling images, often available directly through the Internet within minutes of the action itself.

"Getty Images has a monumental passion for sports photography and we are thrilled to cover the Athens Games at such an unprecedented level," said Jonathan Klein, co-founder and CEO of Getty Images. "Our comprehensive coverage has captured many of the defining moments in sporting history, making Getty Images the ultimate resource for sports imagery worldwide, including the Olympic Games. Serving as the photographic partner to the International Olympic Committee for the tenth consecutive time, we are confident that our coverage of the Athens Games will be the greatest yet."

Since increasing its focus on both editorial imagery and editorial customers, Getty Images has become one of the most esteemed providers of news, sport and entertainment photography worldwide. In addition to representing renowned contributing photographers, Getty Images employs a staff of top photojournalists who cover political, sporting and social events across the globe; their images appearing in the most widely read newspapers, magazines and Web sites each day.

As a complement to its live coverage of the Summer Games, Getty Images offers one of the largest collections of Olympic imagery in the world. Its archive contains some of the most notable Olympic photographs dating from the most recent Games in Salt Lake City, to the 1896 Games in Athens. The collection includes moments such as the 1896 image of Greek marathon runner Spyridon Louis on his last lap around the stadium as he is joined by the King of Greece, George I, before winning the gold medal, as well as the 1908 photograph of Dorando Pietri's marathon in which he was disqualified for being helped across the finish line. The company's photography can also be viewed at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, where the International Olympic Committee hosts a powerful photographic record of previous Games in conjunction with Getty Images.
