VoIP: Getting Warmer!

Note: This is a rough draft of an article that appeared in the January issue of Internet Telephony magazine. For the edited articles, please visit: http://www.itmag.com

VoIP is hot. Everywhere you look these days, someone is writing about our industry. The Wall Street Journal, The Miami Herald, L.A. Times, Boston Globe… it seems that everyone has finally discovered what we at Internet Telephony magazine have known all along: VoIP is hot. It’s changing the way the world communicates. It’s not a passing fad. It’s moved beyond geekdom to achieve full carrier-class status and enterprises the world over are migrating to IP telephony technology in droves. And it’s here to stay. And while it is somewhat heartwarming to see the mainstream press take notice, it’s even nicer to see the technology that we were born to cover finally get the respect it deserves.

Of course there’s so much more to know about VoIP than 8x8’s stock price or Vonage turning up service in a new city. And there’s only one place to learn all about the future of telecommunications. Internet Telephony Conference & EXPO is the only event that offers a truly complete education, coupled with an Exhibit Hall chock full of the industry’s leading vendors showing their wares. And building off the success of our recent event in Long Beach, CA, the upcoming Miami conference promises to be hotter than any event this industry has ever seen.

There are so many new events and attractions that it’s difficult to list them all in one place, but here’s a preview of what attendees can expect to see in Miami this February 11–13.

TEHRANI’S IP TELEPHONY KILLER APPS
Tehrani’s IP Telephony Killer apps, might just be the most productive hour you will ever spend learning about VoIP. This will be a showcase of live demonstrations of the hottest IP telephony solutions on the market. Participating vendors — hand picked by Internet Telephony magazine’s publisher and editorial staff — will have the opportunity to show off their latest and hottest IP Telephony applications in a 10-minute live demonstration. No slides, no strings. This promises to be a truly can’t miss event and is likely to become part and parcel of future shows as well.

THE FUTURE OF IP TELEPHONY
TMC has gathered together an unsurpassed panel of industry experts to offer their educated perspective on where IP Telephony is headed, and when we can expect it to get there. Visionary speakers from industry leaders MCI, Toshiba, Cisco, Alcatel, Qovia, and Lucent will discuss this hot topic in a Q&A led by moderator Rich Tehrani. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask these industry giants to share their collected experience as they sound off on the Future of IP Telephony.

IP PBX SHOOTOUT REIMAGINED
Another hot new feature making its debut in Miami this February is the all-new IP PBX Shootout, this time featuring a bit of a new twist on the best-attended session at Internet Telephony Conference & EXPO for the past several shows. This time around, Leading IP PBX Manufacturers will square off against leading proponents of Hosted IP Telephony Services. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear the debate, and then decide which solutions make the most sense for their business.

TMC UNIVERSITY
This year, the organizers of the conference have supplemented an already great program with what is arguably one of the more innovative and significant additions to the learning experience: TMC University. TMC University is making its East Coast debut at the show in Miami, with the IP PBX Certification program — the only Independent certification program of its kind validating attendees’ competency in IP PBX selection, deployment, implementation, and management.

Some of the benefits afforded by the IP PBX Certification program include:
• Independent accreditation for completing the curriculum;
• Independently certified evidence that you possess competencies in IP PBX selection, implementation, and management;
• Addition of an impressive certification from a respected source to your resume;
• Enhanced chances for a promotion; and
• Potentially lucrative consulting opportunities.

The inaugural certification program in Long Beach was a tremendous success. For more information, visit TMC University online at www.tmcnet.com/university.

UNBEATABLE EDUCATION
And, as always, Internet Telephony Conference & EXPO will feature an unmatched lineup of Workshops and Summits including SIP Developers Day, Wireless IP Telephony Summit, and the all-new Cable Telephony Summit.

SIP Developers Day
There remains little doubt regarding the significance of SIP — Session Initiation Protocol — and the profound effect it has had on the IP telephony industry. SIP is an IETF signaling protocol for Internet conferencing, telephony, presence, events notification, and instant messaging, and many developers are beginning to realize the tremendous potential of writing applications to take advantage of this standard. SIP Developers Day is a full-day conference designed to educate conferees on the subject of SIP. Special thanks go out to the SIP Forum and SIPCenter.com for sponsoring this event.

Wireless IP Telephony Summit
With the advent of 3G wireless and its native IP architecture, and the surging growth of 802.11x, wireless IP telephony is becoming a reality. Many organizations recognize the huge opportunity to cost effectively equip mobile workers, field sales and service technicians, and traveling employees with productivity-enhancing mobile communications solutions. This special full-day conference program will educate users, equipment manufacturers, and service providers alike about the emerging products, deployment issues, and benefits of deploying wireless IP telephony solutions.

Cable Telephony Summit
TMC's Cable Telephony Summit is the one source for the information you need if you're interested in rolling out Cable Telephony services to your customers. This daylong summit will cover such diverse and vital subjects as Leading Market Drivers; a plan for effectively rolling out new and exciting Enhanced Services; the importance of Upgrading for Voice; and more, including real-life Success Stories from Cable Telephony deployment veterans. Attendees will walk away with the knowledge and the contacts needed to help them achieve their Cable Telephony goals.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
TMC has yet again assembled a stellar lineup of keynote speakers who will share their vision with Expo attendees.

Mun-Yuen Leong, Chief Technology Officer for AVAYA opens this year's conference with his vision of the amazing benefits offered by converged communications. Penny Shaffer, Vice President, AT&T Global Services Americas Region will share her views on the state of the IP telephony industry as will Mark Straton, Senior VP, Global Marketing at Siemens ICN Enterprise Networks Division.
