SOLARFLARE Communications Completes Industry's Highest Performance Analog Signal Processor Creating the First Fully Integrated Transceiver for 10 Gbps Ethernet Traffic Over Unshielded Twisted Pair -UTP- Copper Cable

IRVINE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Aug. 23, 2004 -- IEEE Standard Progress Enables Company to Accelerate the Delivery of the World's First Fully Compliant Industry Standard 10GBASE-T Transceiver

SOLARFLARE Communications Inc., a producer of high-performance semiconductor products for physical-layer connectivity, has created a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) chip that integrates the complex analog front-end (AFE) circuits of the company's 10 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) Ethernet transceiver, which it demonstrated last March in a data-rate breakthrough for copper transmission. The March 2004 demonstration proved, for the first time, that a CMOS transceiver can sustain 10 Gbps operation over Category 5e, Category 6, Category 6e and Category 7 copper cable, the most preferred and easy-to-use cable types for interconnecting computers, switches, and routers in Ethernet networks.

Combined with SOLARFLARE's previously announced DSP transceiver, the two-chip solution employs revolutionary technology that mitigates the host of impairments that, until now, have degraded the communication channel over UTP wiring and made 10 Gbps transmission impossible.

The SOLARFLARE AFE is a mixed analog and digital device fabricated with 0.18-micron CMOS technology, housed in a 473-pin ball grid array (BGA) package. Designed in-house and containing in excess of 2.7 million transistors, the AFE integrates the functionality of four 10-bit, 1 giga samples-per-second (Gsps) analog-to-digital converters with various programmable-gain amplifiers and phase-locked-loops. As such, it extends the state-of-the-art in analog chip design by employing special isolation techniques to allow multiple instantiations of high-speed, high-accuracy data converters in proximity to low-noise, high-linearity amplifiers.

"The demonstration of a 10Gb Ethernet UTP transceiver and the more active participation of the transceiver vendor community have accelerated the formation of the standard (IEEE 802.3an)," said Russell Stern, chief executive officer, SOLARFLARE. "The standards collaboration has resulted in the formulation of a high-performance signal processing specification that will assure widespread market adoption. The clarity in the standard's direction and the knowledge gained in producing our first integrated 10Gbps transceiver have enabled SOLARFLARE to accelerate its goal of introducing the world's first fully standards compliant 10GBASE-T transceiver."

About SOLARFLARE

SOLARFLARE Communications is a producer of high-performance mixed signal semiconductor solutions for system connectivity. SOLARFLARE's communications architectures and advanced signal processing algorithms enable higher data rates, lower costs, and greater distances than traditional transmission techniques. SOLARFLARE's first products address the operation of Ethernet at 10 Gbps over structured copper wiring in the enterprise.

SOLARFLARE has headquarters in Irvine. Additional company information is available at www.solarflare.com.
