ADAPTIX Debuts with Private Equity Financing and Innovative Mobile Broadband Wireless Access Technology

SEATTLE --(Business Wire)-- Aug. 18, 2004 -- Company Marketing its Breakthrough Wireless Infrastructure for Mobile Broadband Internet Access

ADAPTIX(R), Inc. today announced its formation and the commercial launch of its broadband wireless product lines. ADAPTIX develops and manufacturers' wireless equipment for point-to-multipoint, broadband, non-line-of-sight (NLOS), last-mile access and backhaul solutions that supplement, extend, or replace wire line infrastructure. The Company was founded by an experienced team of engineers and innovative management that recently secured a major round of funding from Baker Capital, a New York-based private equity firm. Among the ADAPTIX assets are all of the pioneering OFDMA patent filings and intellectual property of Broadstorm, Inc.

ADAPTIX is a full participating member in the WiMAX Forum, which was established to commercialize and ensure system interoperability of systems based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. WiMAX is the technology that extends the reach of IP broadband metropolitan Fiber networks well beyond the relatively small local area network coverage of WiFi in offices, homes or public access hot spots. The ADAPTIX products and intellectual property support and complement the pending mobility version (802.16e) of the WiMAX standard which is expected to be finalized in late 2005.

The company's products address an emerging market known as Broadband Wireless Access or "BWA," which is gaining increasing attention in the broader telecom marketplace as a newly viable, enterprise class "broadband" (defined as greater than 1 Megabit per second (Mbps) average user transmission speed) voice and data service. The BWA market is beginning to gain commercial traction due to the break out in the capabilities of the technology, the emergence of global standards, the escalating demand-pull of both broadband-starved regions and the massive growth of the Internet into a fully converged network delivering voice, audio, image and video in addition to data.

The system is software driven, providing high modularity and granular control over the critical operational aspects in wireless communications delivery. The company's products are engineered to fit seamlessly into existing wireless infrastructure base stations and network architectures. The ADAPTIX infrastructure is extremely flexible, and can be configured to deliver rural services up to 30 Km in radius, or to serve very high density urban markets with base stations spaced between 1-4 Km. The system can operate in radio spectrum frequency bands between 700 MHz and 6 GHz, thus making the solution available to a broad market of network service providers using either the unlicensed or licensed frequency domains.

ADAPTIX will leverage its unique suite of WiMAX & WiBro compatible technologies to provide mobile broadband IP network solutions, and plans to contend for a leadership position for next generation broadband wireless networks by delivering the most favorable Total Value of Ownership (TVO) through:

-- providing a software defined radio (SDR) future-proof network platform with high performance, low cost, and ease of scalability;

-- offering rapid carrier ROI;

-- delivering fixed, portable and mobile IP broadband services from one network platform;

-- supporting voice, data, and video services;

-- delivering multi-megabit speeds to individual users;

-- making the most efficient use of radio spectrum assets;

-- operating as a pure IP network environment;

The ADAPTIX breakthrough FastSwitching Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (FastSwitching-OFDMA(TM)) technology is the basis for the Company's intelligent radio access network system which delivers unprecedented spectral efficiency through adaptive frequency selection and interference mitigation techniques. ADAPTIX's technology provides highly efficient control over all of the radio system domains, including frequency, time, space, modulation, power and coding. The combination of these techniques results in a system agile enough to overcome rapidly changing radio frequency fades, nulls, and interference everywhere within the coverage footprint of the network. Each user terminal is constantly adapting to the radio environment at its specific location, ensuring that each terminal is always operating on the minimum amount of spectrum at the highest order of modulation delivering the greatest bits per hertz of efficiency.

ADAPTIX has developed a system that eliminates prior barriers to adoption for wireless broadband that can challenge the price/performance capabilities of incumbent wire line solutions like DSL and cable modems. Previous BWA adoption barriers included 1) higher total cost of ownership ("TCO") than existing systems; 2) poor spectral efficiency, which limited scalability; 3) unreliable technology; 4) line-of-sight, externally mounted antenna systems that required roof rights for installation; 5), lack of standards. ADAPTIX's system eliminates all these barriers.

This unique and powerful system delivers connectivity intelligent and flexible enough to support streaming video, VoIP telephony, still or moving images, e-mail, Web browsing, e-commerce, and location-based services. Network service providers will now enjoy the flexibility to market mobile, nomadic, and fixed services at true broadband speeds with extremely efficient control over the access and use of their radio spectrum and network resources.

ADAPTIX POISED TO ADVANCE NEXT-GENERATION COMMUNICATIONS

Vern Fotheringham, ADAPTIX CEO, stated "Ultimately, ADAPTIX is a software company, pioneering in both software defined radio technologies and leveraging our patent pending interference tolerant and frequency adaptive techniques. Our human resources and technology assets provide ADAPTIX with the key elements necessary for success. These factors combine to put us in a strong position to hasten the widespread adoption of standards-based mobile and fixed wireless broadband connectivity, which will be the next significant development of wireless communications."

Rob Manning, General Partner at Baker Capital, remarked that "the Company has proven its technology to be among the most advanced of the identified vendors for Beyond 3G wireless infrastructure. More importantly, however, ADAPTIX has a customer-focused management team with the passion, vision, experience and persistence to drive this newcomer into a significant position in the future of wireless communications."

"The emergence of ADPATIX solutions is very exciting," adds Pyramid Research's William Rojas, who is also Managing Director of ITHINK Holdings Corporation (a 4G Project Development Company) and co-author of Brave New Unwired World. "The Company and its technology will help set the stage for significant improvements in spectrum efficiency and increased flexibility for service providers to meet the demands of enterprise, government and residential consumers. Moreover, the Company's adaptive software technology will allow it to provide solutions for both advanced telecom infrastructure markets as well as developing markets where Internet access is not readily accessible to the average consumer. The emergence of ADPATIX technology sets the stage for the next generation communications -- the convergence of broadband fixed and mobile wireless and the establishment of ad hoc ubiquitous networks leading to a global planetary grid."
