Mobility Electronics Awarded New Patent on Split Bridge Technology

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mobility Electronics, Inc. , a leading provider of innovative portable computing solutions for the mobile electronics device user, today announced the United States Patent Office has awarded the company an additional patent for its Split Bridge(R) technology, U.S. Patent 6,715,022. Split Bridge, designed, developed, and sold under Mobility Electronics' MAGMA(TM) brand, is currently used in several of Mobility Electronics' expansion and docking products, and is also licensed to key partners.

The new patent provides broad claims involving the mirroring of data from one end of a serial bus to the other. Mirroring of data is a key concept that enables simple but accurate high speed linking of two parallel busses via a serial link. The patent, as well as several other issued expansion patents, is especially notable in the context of the emergence and growing popularity of various industry standard serial buses, such as PCI Express(TM), for computer expansion and I/O.
This new patent further strengthens our intellectual property position in regard to this emerging technology, bringing the number of issued U.S. and foreign Split Bridge patents to 11, said Charlie Mollo, CEO of Mobility Electronics. Our Split Bridge technology has proven to be a straight forward low cost solution to a number of applications in expansion and connectivity.
First patented in 1999, Split Bridge technology provides for standard, flexible expansion for any PCI-based computing system. By serializing the transmission of data over a thin cable, Mobility Electronics' patented Split Bridge technology allows the extension of a computer's main PCI bus to a remote location and provides bi-directional bandwidth of 1.25 Gbps. It is significantly faster than other common connectivity technologies currently available such as Firewire or USB 2.0, and provides a low cost, high-bandwidth solution to support virtually any peripheral device. This technology also enables two computer devices to link up, allowing notebook computers to serve as legitimate desktop system replacements by offering users universal compatibility, high performance and expandability.
Mobility Electronics' Split Bridge technology won the PC Week Best New Technology Award at COMDEX(R) Fall 1999 and received honorable mention at the March 2000 Mobile Insights conference for the Technology Achievement Innovation of the Year.
Mobility Electronics' MAGMA branded products lead the industry in PCI Bus expansion and remote connectivity. Sold out of San Diego, California, MAGMA provides innovative, high-tech expansion solutions to major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in various industries in more than 45 countries. MAGMA's leading solutions include CardBus-to-PCI Expansion Systems, PCI-to-PCI Expansion Systems, bus expansion link kits, Split Bridge technology, and serial adapters for embedded applications, servers, notebooks, and desktop computers. The MAGMA brand also has a broad portfolio of expansion and connectivity related patents.
