Computerworld Editor-in-Chief Maryfran Johnson, CXO Media Founder and Former CXO President Joseph L. Levy Join TechTarget; IDG Veterans to Extend TechTarget Portfolio of Targeted Media Properties and Events

NEEDHAM, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 2, 2004 -- Information technology (IT) media company TechTarget announced today that Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief of IDG's flagship publication, Computerworld, has departed International Data Group (IDG) to join TechTarget as an editor in chief, effective September 7. TechTarget announced also that Joseph L. Levy, founder of IDG's CXO media unit and former president and CEO of IDG Communications, joined TechTarget as executive vice president. Levy and Johnson will collaborate to develop media properties and events for a new integrated media group at TechTarget.

"The quality of TechTarget media and the strength of our editorial team are central to our ability to develop the qualified audiences our advertisers seek," said TechTarget CEO Greg Strakosch. "Our history of innovation and the enormous success of TechTarget's business have enabled us consistently to attract top-level talent from our competitors. It is a boon to our readers and advertisers alike for us to welcome Maryfran Johnson, whose five-year tenure as Computerworld editor in chief was distinguished by groundbreaking journalism that has merited more than 100 editorial awards. Joe Levy's entrepreneurial spirit, demonstrated by the launch of CIO and his stewardship of IDG Communications and CXO media, will further TechTarget's leadership in IT media."

Founded in 1999, TechTarget has grown from $7 million in its first full year of business to a projected $45-$50 million in 2004. TechTarget's media and events include 22 highly targeted IT Web sites, two monthly magazines, and more than a dozen conferences. In June 2004, TechTarget received $70 million in Series B funding, the second largest venture capital deal in the nation this year. The Series B round brought TechTarget--which has been profitable since 2002--to $112 million in total funding.

"TechTarget holds a unique position among IT publishers," said TechTarget Executive Vice President Joseph L. Levy. "During an otherwise crippling period for tech publishing, TechTarget achieved remarkable growth by developing media properties that best meet the needs of readers and advertisers. I'm excited to join the company at a time when it is ramping up its investments in media, hiring aggressively, and expanding internationally. The industry has only just begun to see what TechTarget is capable of."

"This new TechTarget media group is a tremendous opportunity for me to once again participate in building a robust editorial brand," said Maryfran Johnson. "TechTarget is a fast-moving, entrepreneurial company that shares my passion for high-quality IT journalism."

About Maryfran Johnson

Maryfran Johnson brings more than 23 years' experience to her role as editor in chief at TechTarget. Previously, Johnson served as editor in chief of IDG's Computerworld, a role she assumed in 1999 when Paul Gillin departed Computerworld to build the editorial team at TechTarget. Johnson also played a prominent role in Computerworld events, including Storage Networking World, Mobile & Wireless World and the IT Executive Summit Series.

In her five-year tenure as editor in chief, Computerworld's editorial team has earned more than 100 awards, including the prestigious Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award. In 2003 alone, Computerworld was honored by the American Society of Business Publication Editors with its prestigious "Magazine of the Year" award and 21 additional Awards for Editorial Excellence. In 2004, American Business Media honored Johnson with the inaugural Timothy White Award for editorial courage and integrity.

Johnson began her career as a daily newspaper reporter. She joined Computerworld as a reporter in 1989, and was promoted to news editor in 1994. In 1996 Johnson assumed the role of executive editor, where she was responsible for all newsroom operations.

Johnson lends her expertise on IT management to executive education programs at UCLA, The Ohio State University, Babson College and Penn State. She has served as a keynote speaker at numerous industry and user conferences, and has appeared as a commentator for national radio and television programs, including PBS's Lehrer NewsHour, the CBS Evening News, CNN Financial News and National Public Radio.

Johnson holds a master's degree in journalism from The Ohio State University, where she was a Kiplinger Public Affairs Reporting Program Fellow from 1987 to 1988. She holds a bachelor's degree in French literature from the State University of New York at Albany and a bachelor's in journalism from the University of Florida, which honored her as one of six Alumni of Distinction of the College of Journalism and Communications.

About Joseph L. Levy

Levy began his career at IDG and spent 30 years at the company, holding leadership roles in sales and management. As president, CEO, and founder of IDG's CXO Media, Inc., Levy launched CIO magazine, a twice-monthly magazine reaching top-level decision makers at Global 2000 companies, non-profit and government agencies in ten countries. Levy developed the publication's circulation to 135,000 and built annual revenues to $70 million. Levy retired from IDG in 2002 to start The Quadragon Group, a global consultancy providing strategic consulting services to CIOs and other C-level executives in media and high-tech organizations.
