Telecam Deploys Programmable VoIP Gateway From Emergent Network Solutions and Excel Switching Corp.

HYANNIS, Mass. & DALLAS --(Business Wire)-- Oct. 13, 2004 --

El Salvador-based Wholesale Provider Migrates to IP with New, Carrier-Grade Multifunction Gateway based on Emergent's ENTICE and Excel's CSP 2090

Emergent Network Solutions, Inc., a leading provider of open solutions and services to carriers operating in emerging networks, and Excel Switching Corporation, a leading provider of carrier-class, open services platforms, media gateways, and media servers for communications networks, today announced the availability and successful deployment of a new next generation VoIP Gateway. The new VoIP Gateway, now available through Emergent, bridges IP (H.323 and SIP) and TDM (SS7, PRI, and R2) while supporting media-intensive enhanced services, making it one of the few "single-box" multifunction media gateway solutions available today.

Telecam S.A., a leading wholesale provider based in El Salvador, deployed the integrated gateway solution to migrate its services to VoIP.

"The success of our business and growth rests with our ability to easily expand our services to include IP technology," said Carlos Lopez Canas, executive director of Telecam S.A.. "With Emergent's integrated, gateway solution based on Excel's platform, we are able to seamlessly expand our network to include VoIP service, while maintaining our current investment in existing network architecture. As we begin to roll out new services, the ENTICE open services capability is ready, regardless of the network environment we need to connect with."

Perfect for wholesale carriers and those who wish to implement VoIP along with other service options, the Emergent platform can easily add voice messaging, unified messaging, prepaid/postpaid, and other enhanced services as desired. The Excel-based Emergent VoIP Gateway is a high-density, open services solution that can process traffic ranging from 192 ports to over 14,000 ports as desired.

According to Daniel Klein, senior analyst for the Communications Network Infrastructure Advisory Service at The Yankee Group, integrated programmable gateways serve a critical need in the fast-growing VoIP telephony industry. "Companies looking to enter the VoIP provider market often have a mixture of legacy systems and protocols that must be accommodated. Given this constraint, a versatile, cross-platform gateway that also offers service flexibility will find quick acceptance," said Klein.

Driving the call management, routing, and configuration functions of the new VoIP Gateway is Emergent's ENTICE (Emergent Network Telecommunications Infrastructure Control Environment), a next generation, open-solutions call control platform. ENTICE's application layer APIs and open source code allow customers to easily add and deploy new services as needed to increase efficiency and respond to rapidly-changing customer service needs.

"Incorporating the power of the Emergent ENTICE integrated softswitch technology makes this gateway one of the most powerful, flexible, and market-responsive products of its kind," said JC Murphy, president of Excel Switching Corporation. "Not only does it provide call control, translations, routing and element provisioning for virtually all modern network protocols, but also it allows end-user services to be added or updated on the fly, without downtime."

ENTICE is hosted on Excel's Converged Services Platform (CSP) 2090 an open services platform that addresses industry demand for high-performance, cost-effective VoIP processing and delivery of enhanced services in mobile and fixed networks. Excel's CSP 2090 provides integrated, advanced media processing capabilities such as voice recording, file playback, and conferencing, along with exceptional scalability, reliability, and redundancy.

"Emergent chose the Excel CSP 2090 because it is a rock-solid programmable media gateway capable of growing with the carrier," said Nathan Franzmeier, CEO of Emergent Network Solutions. "Its exceptional engineering supports the unique needs of individual architectures while also delivering exceptional call quality and easy service additions."
