Spirent Communications Collaborates with the Department of Defense on IPv6 Transition

ROCKVILLE, Md. --(Business Wire)-- Oct. 4, 2004 -- Organizations Team Up on Joint User Interoperability Communications Exercise & Joint Rapid Architecture Exercise for IPv6 Testing

Spirent Communications(TM) (NYSE:SPM) (LSE:SPT) today announced that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has asked Spirent Communications to participate in IPv6 demonstrations directly connected to the Communication Electronic Command's (CECOM) Joint User Interoperability Exercise (JUICE) and Joint Rapid Architecture Exercise (JRAE).

The DoD's Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) has used Spirent Communications' test solutions to assess the status of IPv6 in three areas key to the DoD's migration from IPv4 to IPv6 for all inter and intra networking by 2008.

JUICE '04 and JRAE help the U.S. military enhance the interoperability of systems and devices throughout the DoD community by assessing the impact of emerging systems and technology in an operational network.

Spirent's award-winning SmartBits(R) Test System enabled the JITC to accomplish three of the major testing objectives for the JUICE effort:

-- Dual Stack Interoperability to determine the interoperability of routers in a combined IPv4/IPv6 environment

-- Differentiated Services for IPv6 to determine if network devices could correctly prioritize, queue, and forward IPv6 packets

-- BGP4+ Convergence to determine if the system under test could recognize a change in topology and route packets accordingly.

"Exercises such as JUICE '04 and JRAE allow for the identification of early interoperability issues in early deployment and developmental converged networks," said Captain Daniel R. Millane, JITC Test Director for Moonv6. "We appreciate Spirent's support in the JUICE and JRAE efforts and look forward to working with Spirent on future initiatives."

During the dual stack IPv4 and IPv6 interoperability test, the JITC used Spirent's SmartBits SmartFlow(TM) QoS automation application to generate traffic and analyze the capability of network devices to handle both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. The JITC also employed Spirent's SmartBits SmartFlow in a QoS test. In this case, Spirent's SmartBits Test System generated traffic and quantified the priority given to certain types of traffic, such as voice and video. Spirent's SmartBits TeraRouting Tester(TM) was applied by the JITC during the BGP4+ convergence test to verify that the devices being tested could recognize a change in routing topology and reroute packets accordingly.

Over the course of the JUICE and JRAE efforts, Spirent has provided the DoD with equipment, assisted in developing test methodologies, and assigned Spirent engineers to five locations on the DoD's Defense Research and Engineering Network. These sites include Indian Head, Md. (JITC), Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. (JITC), Scott Air Force Base, Ill., and the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab where more than $1 million of Spirent products are used in industry forum test beds.
