Nortel Expands Interoperability of VoIP, Multimedia Solutions for Carriers; Recognizes New Nortel Compatible Products; Adds More Industry Leaders
TORONTO --(Business Wire)-- Nov. 18, 2004 -- Nortel (NYSE: NT)(TSX: NT) is expanding the compatibility of its voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and multimedia solutions through completion of interoperability testing with new, third-party products and the addition of new industry leaders to its interoperability program.
Nortel has awarded Nortel Compatible Product status to products from Adax, ARRIS (Nasdaq: ARRS), AudioCodes (NASDAQ: AUDC), Carrier Access (NASDAQ: CACS), Entrisphere, Nuera and Westell. This designation is awarded to companies that successfully demonstrate interoperability with Nortel's Communication Server (CS) 2000 superclass softswitch and Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5200.
New members of Nortel's VoIP and multimedia interoperability program include ADTRAN (NASDAQ: ADTN), Alpha Networks (TSE: 3380), Dataflex Design Communications, Ltd., Mpathix, and T-Metrics, Inc. As part of this program, member companies plan to participate in extensive testing in Nortel's lab facilities, and in some instances at customer premises, to achieve interoperability with Nortel's VoIP and multimedia portfolio.
Nortel's interoperability testing program was designed to help ensure seamless integration between multi-vendor solutions.
"This is about giving service providers choices as they deliver the widest possible range of new, affordable services that power global commerce and enhance the human experience through communications," said Ken Pecot, general manager, Service Provider Voice Networks, Nortel. "Interoperability between vendors' products allows service providers to speed deployment times and ultimately deliver to the market superior integrated voice, video and data that will enhance how, when and where people communicate with full mobility. This is a new era of communication and Nortel is leading the way. "
Nortel awarded certificates of compatibility based upon successful completion of interoperability with the CS 2000 and:
-- Adax's Tunneling Gateway (TG), allowing transparent transport of SS7 signaling across an IP core.
-- ARRIS' PacketCable(TM) and DOCSIS(R) 2.0 qualified CMTS (Cable Modem Termination Systems) and DOCSIS 2.0 certified E-MTAs (Embedded Multimedia Termination Adapters) to provide customer premise termination for cable operators who want to provide VoIP services. This solution has been deployed by Charter Communications as part of a triple play solution providing voice, video and data to Charter customers.
-- AudioCodes' MediaPack(TM) (MP) 104 and 108 Analog VoIP Gateways, allowing connection of legacy telephone systems and PBXs to IP-based telephony networks.
-- Carrier Access' Adit(R) 600 CMG (Customer Media Gateway), a carrier-grade VoIP gateway that enables high-capacity converged IP service delivery with multi-T1/E1 access while supporting a TDM to IP migration strategy.
-- Entrisphere's BLM 1500, enabling packet voice and fiber-to-the-premises capabilities to allow carriers to increase revenues by providing high bandwidth and packet voice services to their subscribers.
-- Nuera's ORCA BTX-21 and BTX-8 media gateways, both of which were certified using the PacketCable Trunk Gateway Control Protocol. Nuera's trunk gateways can be deployed by cable operators as a link between a VoIP cable network and the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
-- Westell's carrier-class InterChange iQ 2032, which allows European service providers to offer a flexible solution for connecting existing PBXs over an IP network while maintaining the support of existing networked voice services.
Details regarding certificates of compatibility, including products and tested software releases, can be found at www.nortel.com/prd/dpp/carrier_index.html.
Nortel will conduct interoperability testing between:
-- ADTRAN's Total Access 600 Series integrated access devices (IADs) and Nortel's CS 2000 to enable carriers to offer integrated voice and data services over a single broadband connection.
-- Alpha Networks' VoIP Gateway and Nortel's MCS 5200 to develop and enhance session initiation protocol (SIP) services for customer premise based VoIP gateways. Alpha Networks provides engineering and manufacturing services to industry leaders for both consumer and small office/home office (SOHO) applications, including D-Link Systems, Inc.
-- Dataflex's Voice Integration at Network Edge (ViNE) suite of VoIP integrated access devices (IADs) and Nortel's MCS 5200. The Dataflex ViNE IADs are all capable of delivering toll grade voice (POTs, BRI or PRI) and high speed data over a broadband connection (ADSL or G.SHDSL) using either SIP or MGCP.
-- Mpathix's Unified Messaging (UM) solution and Nortel's MCS 5200 to enable the deployment of open system, carrier-grade Unified Messaging solutions at a lower cost.
-- T-Metrics' PhoneGroups(TM) Centrex IP Console and Nortel's CS 2000 to provide the capability to deliver Centrex IP features through an intuitive PC-based attendant console.
Nortel's MCS 5200, part of the multimedia communications portfolio along with the MCS 5100, is a SIP-based media and applications server. It leverages an open, standards-based architecture and commercially available hardware and software, positioning service providers to offer advanced multimedia and collaboration applications for businesses and consumers.
Nortel's CS 2000 superclass softswitch provides call control and delivers a full set of voice services. A superclass softswitch meets all criteria for 'true' service provider circuit-to-packet migration, including local, tandem and long distance capability on a single platform; full business and residential telephony service sets, and carrier-grade reliability and scalability.
