Lights! Music! Power! Multi-tiered power management solution simplifies system design

Freescale Semiconductor offers powerful solution for cost-sensitive wireless consumers

TEMPE, Arizona – November 9, 2004 – As consumers demand more from their cell phones and mobile electronics, designers are looking for new solutions to meet a new class of power-hungry applications. To meet this need, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. (NYSE:FSL) is expanding its power management and user interface portfolio with multi-tiered solutions. Designers and ultimately consumers can benefit from product miniaturization, portability and the enhanced product features resulting from three advanced power management integrated circuits.

Designing a solution for smaller, low-cost phones? The MC13790 is designed for the low-tiered, cost conscious portable wireless applications and for consumers that want a basic phone that is smaller and less costly than previous generations. This device integrates core power management functions and the RX/TX audio system with a Li-Ion battery charger. This enables the designer to replace a number of discrete parts or multiple ICs with a single package. The MC13790 also is designed for Freescale’s 2.5G GSM Innovative ConvergenceTM platform solution.

Designing a battery powered device that includes a USB interface? Looking to upgrade it to the new CEA-936 carkit standard? The MC13883 is a cost saving solution integrating the USB 2.0 On-the-Go (OTG) transceiver, a Li-Ion battery charger, and CEA 936 car-kit interface all on one IC. Consumers can transfer files, music or graphics to enjoy new multimedia-rich product features through a mini-USB connector. Consumers can also charge their portable product batteries through this same USB interface. The MC13883 charging and peripheral interface is a modular drop in solution for cellular handsets, MP3 players, voice recorders, digital cameras and other portable handheld devices.

Lights! Music! Power! Have it all! The MC13890 is a state-of-the art integration of major functionalities bundled together in a space saving monolithic solution. The highly integrated MC13890 power management and user interface IC is ideal for mid- to high-tier product lineups, such as, GSM/GPRS/EDGE and CDMA mobile handsets, PDAs, digital still cameras and toys. Not only does it embed the MC13883’s CEA-936 car-kit functionality and features, it also includes a full audio system for mono phone audio and fidelity stereo music playback. Additionally, it has a multi-mode buck switcher for power efficiency, a boost switcher for lighting and USB OTG applications and numerous LDO regulators for power optimization, supply isolation and peripheral support. A lighting management system is included for enhanced lighting of the display allowing fun lighting patterns for caller ID differentiation, visual alert, status indicators or aesthetic case lighting options.

“We offer designers the freedom to design power management solutions to match the latest consumer list of must-haves,” stated Kent Heath, director of cellular operations, Radio Products Division of Freescale’s wireless group. “We are introducing advanced industry solutions engineered to allow the highest capability for the smallest space at a great savings.”
