Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Awards Weather and Radar Processor (WARP) Program Contract Extension to Harris Corporation

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Harris Corporation a six-month, $5.7 million contract extension to the Weather and Radar Processor (WARP) program, bringing the total value of the program to more than $131 million since 1996. WARP is a next-generation weather and radar processor that provides the FAA with the software tools necessary to consolidate weather data from several sources into a single, integrated display to support air traffic operations nationwide. The announcement was made during the Air Traffic Control Association's (ATCA) 49th Annual Conference and Exposition (Harris Booth #301) being held October 31 - November 3 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington D.C.

Harris was originally tasked with developing, procuring, installing, and supporting WARP systems at the 21 Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCCs) nationwide, the Air Traffic Control System Command Center, and the William J. Hughes Technical Center. FAA personnel at the ARTCCs have been using WARP to view real-time, graphical weather data at their workstations. WARP provides advanced, NEXRAD weather data directly to the controllers' displays, replacing the more cumbersome, alphanumeric data displays used previously.
"The WARP system has been fully operational for nearly two years, and we are very pleased that the FAA has selected Harris to continue supporting the system," said Al Dukes, president of the Civil Programs business unit of Harris Corporation's Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD). "WARP is a key initiative in the FAA's modernization efforts, and we are excited about the prospect of being awarded the WARP Maintenance and Sustainment Services (WMSS) contract in April '05."
Weather data originates from the National Weather Service and other U.S. Government radar sources and is transmitted via landlines to the ARTCCs. There, it is collected by the Harris WARP server and then transmitted both to the on-site meteorologist's workstation for forecasting and analysis, and to the air traffic controllers' main display monitors, where it is displayed in color blocks along with individual aircraft position information. Harris provides the hardware and software to collect the weather data, as well as the ability to display it in an easy-to-view format.
Harris GCSD, one of four divisions within Harris Corporation, conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces and supports state-of-the-art, assured communications(TM) solutions and information systems that solve the mission-critical challenges of its military and government customers, while serving as the technology base for the company's diverse commercial businesses. Harris Corporation, which also provides tactical radio, microwave, broadcast, and network products and systems, serves customers in more than 150 countries.
