Nucleus is the First IT Research Firm to Gain NASBA Approval to Deliver Courses to Financial Professionals for CPE Credits

WELLESLEY, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- May 24, 2004 --

Partners with Babson College in Joint Professional Education Initiative

Nucleus Research Launches Comprehensive Service to Help Corporate IT, Financial and Marketing Professionals Understand and Use GAAP-Compliant IT ROI Analysis

Nucleus Research, a global provider of ROI-focused research and advisory services, today announced that it has been approved by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) to provide courses in which certified public accountants can gain continuing professional education (CPE) credits. This makes Nucleus Research the first firm of its kind to provide this level of educational expertise in information technology (IT) ROI analysis. Nucleus has partnered with the Center for Information Management Studies (CIMS) at Babson College, an international leader in entrepreneurial management education, to produce a series of IT ROI courses in the coming months.

Nucleus also announced the launch of the ROI Advisory Service, a comprehensive bundle of products and services designed to enable financial, sales and marketing professionals to understand and use ROI analysis that complies with the tenets of the U.S. Government's Generally Accepted Accounting Principals (GAAP).

"The days of ROI distortion are over in the high-tech industry. Whether your job is to sell, buy or audit IT solutions, it is no longer acceptable - and often not legal - to use 'creative ROI' to accomplish a particular agenda," said Nucleus Research CEO Ian Campbell. "Thus, it benefits all parties in the high-tech industry -- vendors, end-users and financial professionals alike -- to move beyond ubiquitous and flawed 'ROI calculators' and other quasi-ROI tools, and standardize on GAAP-compliant ROI methodology. Our new ROI Advisory Service is designed to enable everyone in the industry to do just that."

The Nucleus Research ROI Advisory Service delivers both training and ongoing support through the following program components:

-- A comprehensive suite of GAAP-standardized ROI tools.

-- Access to the Nucleus Research library of ROI research, which includes hundreds of evaluations of "real world" ROI deployments and entire technology sectors.

-- Access to consulting services to assist clients with specific ROI issues.

-- ROI boot camps and training classes, to learn GAAP-compliant ROI calculation methodology.

"The high tech industry is like the Tower of Babel when it comes to ROI - everyone is speaking their own language and nobody is communicating," said Kavin W. Moody, Executive Director of the Center for Information Management Studies (CIMS) at Babson College. "We applaud Nucleus Research's efforts to help the industry gain a common understanding of GAAP-compliant ROI. By doing this, it helps IT and finance professionals communicate on a productive level, and it helps the industry as a whole adopt a common set of principles for evaluating the projected and historical ROI of IT products and deployments."

Traditionally the purview of corporate finance professionals, ROI is the standard methodology for corporate decision making. ROI can determine when it is time to add personnel, replace machinery, retire buildings and expand business operations. However, ROI has been a problematic proposition with IT investments, because special technical expertise is required to derive the true costs and benefits from a technology deployment. As a result, ROI has largely been a "black hole" for financial professionals.

This problem was compounded with the technology downturn of 2001, when corporations began to focus intensely on ROI evaluation as a prerequisite for any IT purchases. This led to the creation of countless vendor "ROI calculators" that were weighted to show positive returns and, presumably, to help close sales. Additionally, internal personnel at end-user organizations used similar tools to justify purchases to corporate finance.

Nucleus Research was founded to address the ROI problem in the high tech industry. The firm combines extensive technology expertise - having evaluated thousands of end-user deployments - with the financial discipline of certified public accountants to enable true, accurate ROI analysis of IT deployments. The Nucleus ROI Advisory program enables any professional in the high-tech industry to evaluate IT solutions using proven, GAAP-compliant methodologies. This results in an unimpeachable ROI case for anyone responsible for purchasing, selling or auditing IT solutions.
